When will the shining world of futuristic technology arrive?

I think it arrived a month or so ago.

Not only is this a commercial with better special effects than almost any movie from the last century, it also presents robot designs that rock your intellect, and . . .

. . . it's for the Kohler "intelligent toilet".

People, think about that for a moment: we can now sit down and crap on technology that would have stunned the world fifty years years ago. Shocked

Just a few thoughts about the design of robot faces. I don't like robots with overly human-like faces, like the ones above.

Why?

Because I want a robot to look like a beautiful machine — not like a department store mannequin that walks and talks. A robot's face is an opportunity to design a shape that combines facial features with a metal sculpture. It should be sufficiently stylized to blend human features with a boldly mechanical appearance.

Kinda like this.

So, the gorgeous robots in the Kohler commercial should take off those damn Phantom of the Opera masks and let us see their naked robot faces!

The exception to this rule is one of my favorite movies, I, Robot, in which they gave Sonny a face that was just human enough to inspire trust and confidence when he interacted with people. But it also looks overtly "synthetic", so that his face doesn't just look like a plastic mask that covers up the mechanical parts.

And he was also given a carefully limited range of facial expressions, just enough to enhance his verbal communications. But we never saw a deep frown or wide grin, and they only let him appear angry in one scene, when he denied committing murder.

Normally he (and the others of his type) presented a calm and reasonable demeanor which, as I said, inspired the humans around him to feel that he could be trusted.
