Does anyone know why the space suits the Astronauts wear have the zipper in the back where it is hard to reach, rather than in the front, where access is easy?

David.

Because if you forget to zip up your pants, you're embarrassed.

But if you forget to zip up your space suit, you're dead.

So, they make it impossible for you to forget, because somebody has to help you put it on.

I'm just guessin', of course. Very Happy

They don't dress themselves. It is done by a team on Earth and by at least one other in space.

They should read Have Spacesuit — Will Travel by Robert A. Heinlein.

From an engineering point of view, the suit has a lot of attachments for air, monitoring vital signs, etc. These need to be in front because the back has to be comfortable while experiencing multiple g's. A front zipper would only complicate the placement of this equipment, whereas a zipper in back can be cushioned fairly easily.

There is an Adam Savage video where he made two 2001 ASO moon suits to wear at Comic Con. He invited an Astronaut to wear the other one. It is interesting to listen to the Astronaut talk about the space suits they wear, how the finger tips of the gloves are heated, how the suits are cooled, and they use dog leashes to zip up their space suits.

And here, by God, is that very video! A very cool video it is, David, and we thank you for calling it to our attention.

While walking around and posing for pictures, they met a lot of friendly people, like this guy who was some author who wrote some book they made into some movie — I'm not clear on the details. Cool

This one gets my vote for the most outlandish, overly-fancy spacesuit. Very Happy

Well, if we're gonna talk spacesuits and one of my 2 favorite mythbusters, did you see Adam's amazing Apollo 11 suit? He added a few details to it to make it really authentic, it looked great.
