Hey, this is exciting!

Yeah, yeah, we know that every remake and reboot is a outrage in the eyes of purist who wouldn't be happy even if they cloned Claude Rains and shot the freakin' movie in black & white, but let's not have this project assassinated before it even has a director, okay?

Anyway, the short article is good enough to paste right here for all to see, and so (with thanks to Butch), here it is.

Johnny Depp is joining Universal's burgeoning monster universe.

The actor has signed on to star in The Invisible Man, the studio's latest offering being developed by producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.

It is unclear where the movie stands in terms of development. There is no director attached at this stage. The studio has a writers room with elite scribes, overseen by Kurtzman and Morgan, who are tackling reboots of the entire line of Universal's classic monsters; sources say Ed Solomon, best known for writing Men in Black and Now You See Me, is writing Invisible Man.

The new project is based on the HG Wells novel that was famously adapted into the 1933 black-and-white classic starring Claude Rains. Like most of Universal's monster movies, the story is tinged with tragedy.

In the original pic, Rains played a chemist who uses a dangerous drug to turn invisible. The transformation leaves him jealous, paranoid and psychotic and leads to a killing spree. The movie spawned several sequels.

In more recent times, Universal tried to get remakes going with David Goyer and Imagine Entertainment.

By nabbing Depp, one of the biggest stars on the planet, and already having Tom Cruise starring in its reboot of The Mummy, Universal is signaling to all it is thinking big and betting big with its monster universe.

Well, if this one bombs like his last few, it could be a description of his future career.

The photo isn't showing up. Maybe that's why "he's perfect for the role"?

What? You didn't like Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger?!

Actually I've tried about three times to watch that mess all the way through, resuming my downloaded copy at the point I reached previously before finally throwing sofa pillows at the TV and then turning it off.

I haven't made it to the end yet.

I get about as far as the scene where The Lone Ranger rides Silver across the roof of a moving train . . . and then jumps across a large gap to another moving train on a parallel track.

Yeah . . . right . . . Rolling Eyes

Perhaps Depp will have it written into his contract that if the movie bombs, then the filmmakers will have to replace him with a CGI version of Charley Sheen, who's career has no where to go but up. Very Happy

Just to aid you in appreciating my creative genius, here's a side-by-side comparison, a before-and-after set of images, a now-you-see-me-now-don't pair of jpegs.

Behold! Or do not behold? That . . . is the question! Shocked

Look, remaking it with Kevin Bacon didn't work. I really doubt this will either, even if it's a period piece. and if it does turn out to be a period piece, you can bet it'll go all steampunk.

I'll admit that it's best to be ready for a disappointment, but it just might be good. Not all remakes are crap. Just most of them. Sad
