I've noticed that the people who criticize movies — claiming that the acting is bad or the concepts are unoriginal or the script is poorly written — are often the folks who don't write very well. Conversely, the folks who praise movies (especially when the movies are controversial) are often very good writers.

Here are examples from two IMDB users who saw the ID4 sequel.

The first one was so bad that I almost walked out so I thought they will listen to what the audience has to say and learn their lesson but no, this is equally as bad. Where on earth do they find those 'actors'? Acting was simply appalling and whoever wrote those cheesy lines should never be allowed to hold a pen in his hands.

The only thing worth watching were special effects, absolutely nothing else. Acting was so bad that I put my earphones in and started playing music, that is how bad it is. If i had to watch them at least i didn't have to listen to them. When it comes out, rip it out of DVD, edit out all 'acting', put some background music on and enjoy special effects. Never again will Independence Day see me in cinema. Ever!

I did see the original when it came out at the cinema. It was a really good 9/10 and still stands up very well today. I recall the director saying, 'we make bubble gum movies,' that it is and that is in no way a bad thing.

The remake more or less follows the same pattern as the first with only slightly less success. This drops the movie to an 8/10 and the fault (which is really nit picking) is with Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth who can't carry his scenes with the same charisma as Will Smith, but then there aren't many who could. Maybe Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) could have pulled it off better.

I smiled a lot, I laughed a few times, and I was thrilled as the ending unfolded.

Jeff Goldblum does carry the movie more or less on his own, but he has big shoulders.

Here's what I'm thinking: generally speaking, people whose literary skills are relatively low probably don't have the required dendrites to understand and appreciate a good movie. So, they don't like it because they just don't understand it.

On the other hand, people with a high level of intelligence can understand the merits of a good movie (or the lack of merits when it's a bad one), and they can communicate their thoughts on the subject with skill and style.

What do you guys think?

There! Exactly what I was talking about! Brief, concise, and presented with a unique and sincere style. Plus there's not one misspelled word in the whole message!

I rest my case! Very Happy
