‘Big Rip’ theory: The universe is going to tear itself apart
The universe is set to be destroyed in a “big rip” that will suck the whole of reality into a dreadful nightmarish vortex of nothingness.
That’s the cheery prediction from scientists in Portugal, who fear everything in the cosmos is destined to meet this grim fate.
They claim that a mysterious substance called dark matter could take on a “phantom” form as the universe expands, getting heavier and heavier until it eventually tears a great big hole in the fabric of space and time.
Mariam Bouhmadi-López of the Technical University of Lisbon said there were several versions of this theory, ranging from “Little Sibling of the Big Rip” to the “big rip” itself.
“What they have in common is that our galaxy, and all galaxies, would be ripped apart,” she told New Scientist.
“Everything goes wrong.”
Scientists are locked in debate about the fate of the universe.
Some suggest it will continue to expand forever, eventually reaching a grim state where every star dies and all that’s left is black holes, which then fade away to leave behind a massive (and utterly miserable) void.
Others fear the universe will stop growing and then begin to fall back in on itself to cause a “big crunch.”
Either way, it’s curtains for humanity and every other species that calls this reality home.
Before you start panicking, though, we’ve got at least 100 billion years left until any of these grim eventualities befall our universe.

Well, mankind has asked "Do we end in fire or in ice?'.
And, "With a whimper or a bang?"
Maybe we just all go down the drain of a trans-galactic black hole?
I'm just glad I won't be around to see! (Although my atoms will be.....hum...) |

first, may I say, welcome back, glad to see the site up again.
Second, The "big crunch" theory has been pretty much shelved due to the discovery that the universe is not only expanding, it's speeding up. It has to do with "dark energy", and please don't ask me about it, I barely understand "dark matter". Point is, the universe is destined to expand and essentially freeze to death, until all that's left is a thin stew of elementary particles....
of course, that all depends on when and if a quantum glitch pops up and rewrites the whole cosmos in ways we couldn't possibly imagine.
Aren't you glad I'm back??

Ah, but you miss the point.
The theory above is that as the Universe expands the mass of dark matter will increase until it reaches the point where the gravity of it becomes so great that it contracts to a huge singularity (Like a Black Hole.) and pulls everything back into it.
Then it becomes infinitely massive to the point where it would explode again into null space and become another Big Bang.
Pretty awesome, huh?
......And yes Polly....I'm very glad you're back.
I'm glad we are all back. |
