Mr. Holmes (based upon the novel known as A Slight Trick of the Mind) by Mitch Cullin)takes place in 1947, where the long-retired Sherlock Holmes, aged 93, lives in a remote Sussex farmhouse with his housekeeper, Mrs. Munro, and her young son, Roger. Holmes reflects on his life while writing in his journals, tending to his bees, and dealing with the deterioration of his once incredible mind. The film, like the novel, uses flashbacks to reveal events of the past, when he was still at the height of his fame and mental ability at his Baker Street consulting rooms, and during a visit to Japan.

Cast

Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes
Colin Starkey as Dr. John Hamish Watson
Laura Linney as Mrs. Munro
Hattie Morahan as Ann Kelmot
Hiroyuki Sanada as Matsuda Umezaki
Patrick Kennedy as Thomas Kelmot
Roger Allam as Dr. Barrie
Phil Davis as Inspector Gilbert
Frances de la Tour as Madame Schirmer
Milo Parker as Roger Munro
Nicholas Rowe as "Matinee Sherlock" (Cameo)

Yes, this is the same Nicholas Rowe who portrayed Holmes in the cult classic Young Sherlock Holmes!

One thing I really liked in the movie was the stall cart with Sherlock Holmes merchandise:

Really a very good movie!
The bee keeping idea was lifted directly from Doyle's HIS LAST BOW where it was revealed that the only book Sherlock ever wrote on his own was "Notes on the Segregation of the Queen".

It's on my Amazon Prime watchlist - thanks for the reminder. I trust that ol' Sherlock is keeping bees, to prolong his life... do I remember that, in the US radio series, Doctor Watson had retired to the USA, perhaps to Florida, California, or thereabouts? The announcer, between plugs for the wine-producing sponsor, would visit him, to hear about the adventures. Shows available at the Internet Archive! Smile
