Hammer studios gave us "One Million Years B.C." with great dinosaurs and gorgeous cavewomen, then they made "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" with great dinosaurs and gorgeous cavewomen, and finally they made "Creatures the World Forgot" with . . . just cavewomen.

Julie Ege, a former Miss Norway, plays a tribal chief's scantily-clad daughter who is given to another chief. That's pretty much the whole plot.

Produced and written by Michael Carreras, directed by John Chaffey, and filmed in Africa. It was originally rated R because of nudity, but several scenes were cut so it could be given a PG to accommodate younger audiences -- which, all things considered, was a baffling maneuver.

Consider these equations:

No dinosaurs = no kids will go see it.

No nudity = no adults will go see it.

So, who is this movie meant for?

Watch the trailer and decide for yourself.

Just to illustrate that behind ever movie is an unknown backstory we couldn't possibly guess if our lives depended on it, consider this one-and-only trivia item from IMDB.

Julie Ege had just given birth and was not feeling too well, so she retired to bed early during the shoot.

As a result, the crew thought she was stuck up and contrived to keep her out of shot as much as possible, much to the annoyance of Hammer in London.

The Pulp International website has this photo of the lovely Miss Ege:

"The movie was produced by Hammer Studios, the same company that made the popular Raquel Welch lost world epic One Million Years B.C., and the follow-up When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. But where the previous two movies chose to show early humans interacting with dinosaurs, Creatures - spoiler alert for Creationists - went the scientifically factual route and had no giant lizards. Hammer probably did it not out of truthfulness, but out of cheapness. But in any case science wins again. As far as the actual movie goes, there's nobody of quite Raquel Welch's stature involved, but Norwegian actress Julie Ege does about as good a job as any actress could in a production with no actual dialogue. And yes, she wears one of those fur bikinis and looks pretty good in it. Can we recommend the movie? Not really. But if you're bored, try watching it with a few of your cleverest friends, and see who invents the best dialogue."

_____ Creatures The World Forgot (1971 Trailer)

The last of Hammer's quartet of caveman pictures, begun with One Million Years BC (1966). In fact, this is like a repeat of One Million Years BC, just without the dinosaurs (and, therefore, without any stop-motion FX).

It's the same director — Don Chaffey — and the same plot, another reworking of the Cain & Abel story. It revolves around two brothers — the blonde good brother and the dark-haired bad brother.

The film also utilizes stock footage from One Million Years BC — the cataclysmic earthquake and volcanic eruption — near the beginning. So, whereas the previous film ended with a disaster, in this one the earth shaking prompts the plot forward for the remainder of the film, as a small tribe migrates to better pastures, where the two brothers are soon born.

n some ways, since there are no dinosaurs, this is a more realistic depiction of the Stone Age.

The story usually demonstrates the violent nature of such an existence, the primitive rituals, and ancient mating customs. Julie Ege plays a member of another tribe who eventually ends up with the good blonde brother.

This was filmed in Africa and features some local wildlife, though there is also an odd pig-like bear that attacks an enemy caveman in a cave (the animal is obviously a man in a suit). There is no dialog, just brief prehistoric grunts and exclamations.

BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
