This is one crazy star system! Read this paragraph from the article and then look at the artist conception below. These planets are so close together that you'd be able to see them all with the naked eye, and the closest ones would appearing larger than the size of our Moon viewed from Earth!
________________________________
Seven planets circle Trappist-1, with orbits ranging from one and a half to 20 days. If Trappist-1 were our sun, all these planets would fit inside the orbit of Mercury. That's how close they are to their star and why their orbits are so short. The planets have no real names. They're only known by letters, "b" through "h." The letter "A" refers to the star itself.

Exoplanet discovery: What does Nasa's announcement mean - and should we be excited about TRAPPIST-1?
___________
~ An artist's conception of what the surface of the exoplanet TRAPPIST-1f may look like.
The illustration below exaggerates the size of the planets relative to the star and the distance that separates them, but it does give us an idea of how tightly packed this amazing system is!
Imagine how easy it would be for two or more intelligent species living on some of these planets to visit each other! Space travel would be exactly the way it's portrayed in the 1950s TV series Rocky Jones, Space Ranger! Several inhabited planets would be sending out spaceships routinely to visit their neighbors.
Think I'm exaggerating? Too much wishful thinking from Bud the Dreamer? Think again — and then watch this short video.

As Carl Sagan wrote in Cosmos :
"Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us. There is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries." |

Since there are seven planets orbiting a Dwarf star, the planets should be named —
SNEEZY
BASHFUL
GRUMPY
DOPEY
FORGETFUL
SLEEPY
and
DOC !!! |

Apparently there are actually eight dwarfs instead of seven, Gord. The one you left out was "Happy".
________
Which makes you the 8th one you named . . . "Forgetful". _________________ ____________

All those names . . . but no "Forgetful?" How ironic!
I supposed he got left out with the dwarfs who just didn't fit the Disney profile.
________________________________
Sleazy - He was always making inappropriate remarks.
Shifty - The other guys couldn't trust him.
Dizzy - He had inner ear problems and fell down a lot.
Hickey - After kissing the guys goodnight, Snow White would find bruises on her neck.
Nerdy - Wore horn-rim glasses and read comic books.
Horny - The dwarf Snow White had to get a restraining order against.
~ And then there was the girl dwarf who was popular with all the other guys.

Ya know, now that I think of it I know where Forgetful the Elf comes from!
Here in Western New York every Christmas season a local TV channel broadcast THE ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS as 15 minute segments every weekday afternoon ( After school ) from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Along with Santa the main character was an elderly elf named Forgetful. He was always creating havoc and problems for Santa not the least because he was always forgetting things!
So whenever I think of Elves he is the one that always comes first to mind! What better way could there be to honor this denizen of childhood but to include him in the pantheon of planets!
From 1948 to 1973, the children of Buffalo knew who the one, true Santa was — and it was the guy who read their letters on Channel 4.
Santa, however, was barely the star of the show. Forgetful the Elf, played memorably by WBEN copy writer John Eisenberger, was there for the entire run of the show from 1948 to '73. Not only was the elf he played forgetful, but he was silly. Most shows revolved around Forgetful trying to paint Santa's sleigh with polka dots, or trying to convince Santa to get rid of his "old fashioned" red suit for something as bit more modern. Hundreds of times through the show's quarter century, Forgetful was seen greasing up the reindeer's antlers, with the hopes of making them go faster.
Santa and Forgetful had plenty of helpers through the years, all of whom — just like Peters and Eisenberger — had other jobs around the station. Grumbles the Elf was played by executive director Gene Brook and then floor manager Bud Hagman. Another director, Warren Jacober, played Freezy the Polar Bear. There were countless other puppets and guest stars, but none rising even close to the popularity of Eisneberger's Forgetful.
The show ended along with Bill Peters' death in 1973. Eisenberger died in 1984 at the age of 72. |
