The Bowery Boys didn't wear hats like that. Doesn't seem like that fits as well as the "guard" hats.

By the way, this picture of LeRose interior was on the same site with the two pictures I combine above.

Jeez, this is no "neighborhood" theater! The entire building that housed The East Point Theater could fit into this place!

Yes, that's the interior of the LeRose. I've seen that pic before too. It was one of the "when it was new" photos that I mentioned before.

Trust me, while the layout was the same (and it was fairly big), the interior was a mess by the time I was able to attend.

We always tried to arrive a little early for the movie, because it took a few minutes to find a good seat. And by "good" I mean a seat which still had a cushion, and a cushion which wasn't too ripped up and didn't have gum or worse on it.

And thanks so much for adding the gator image to the screen. Just about where the gator man's neck is, there was an ax-shaped scar on the screen for all the years I attended the place.

The balcony (which as you might be able to tell from the photo was not a true balcony) was very rarely opened. As I found out later, that was because that section was condemned as unsafe! But on the occasions when the crowd was large enough, they'd open it up. And, of course, since it was generally forbidden territory, as soon as they opened it, there was an Indiana Land Rush to desert the regular seating and grab a seat in the upper level. Probably a miracle that the balcony never collapsed.

I can actually remember where I sat in that auditorium for a few movies. When I saw CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (the first horror movie I ever saw in a theater, and the first color horror I saw anywhere), I sat on the outside side of the left aisle, in the aisle seat, about 6th or 7th row, my friend Bill to my left. When I saw BRIDES OF DRACULA, I was in the center section, a few seats in from the right aisle, about 3 or 4 rows from the top (of the ground floor seating), with my friend Craig sitting to my right. Weird. Memory is weird.

The LeRose closed in 1963 and sat dormant until 1972 when it was reopened for live stage productions by a local theater group...of which I was a member. So, a decade after glorying in the monsters and flying saucers, I trod the boards where the screen had once hung, performing in 8 or 9 shows there and directing another 3 or 4. It was wonderful and strange to be performing in that place which held such great childhood memories.

I was so impressed with this one when I downloaded it for a special All Sci-Fi SATURDAY Live Chat on March 19th, 2016 that I bought the DVD!

I thought I'd add the trailer and the Youtube version to the thread. Very Happy

Interesting trivia item from IMDB for any members who might be gamers (though I doubt there are any. Very Happy )

"In the early 1980s, 20th Century Fox produced, but did not release, a video game with the name of this movie. Made for the Atari 2600, it even very loosely followed the plot of the film, unlike some other 20th Century Fox games which just used the title of a film. A "prototype" copy of the unreleased game has since surfaced."

Even though The Return of the Fly was a huge disappointment when I finally saw in recent years (compared to The Fly, which I saw at the Roosevelt drive-in in 1958), The Alligator People impressed me enough to actually buy the DVD when I finally saw it a few years ago !

But I'm sure my 11-year-old self in 1959 would have enjoyed them both if I'd seen them at the right time in my life. Very Happy

As is, however, it certainly deserves a bit more attention for what it accomplished on a meager budget with fine actors and a better than average script that reads like something written by Tennessee Williams on Acid.

A few years ago I bought this DVD on a whim, but I haven't watched it since then.

The spirited discussion above has convinced me that it's time for me to do so.
Cool

Is that a challenge mein herr?

The Alligator people challenge you to a chat off!....

That is --- a chat where you really watch this movie until the un worldly, non-sensical. preposterous conclusion occurs and allows the reptilian logic of your puny brain to affect your puny human brain concept of logic !

You don't realize that this is just a test to allow Cthullu to cross over unto the , that is ...YOUR plane of Human conciousnes!

Accept at your own peril puny Human!

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn: "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming".

So...How about it?
Should we watch this flick?

PostPosted: Sun Mar 22, 2020 1:22 pm    Post subject: George Macready Reply with quote

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was somewhat surprised at the appearance of George Macready, one of the most distinguished film villains of classic Hollywood.

I've always been curious about the scar on the side of his face, so I looked up his bio on the IMDb.

According to his son, the scar was the result of an auto accident in 1919 during Macready's college days. He and his companions were riding in a Model T Ford when they hit an ice patch and struck a telephone pole. Macready went through the windshield. The only doctor in the vicinity was a veterinarian who stitched him up. Unfortunately, the doctor was a bit careless and didn't wash up properly. Macready ended up with scarlet fever.

There is some indication in the bio that Macready used the scar for p.r. purposes, claiming it was the result of a duel during his youthful days.

Ain't p.r. great!

Great story, oh Ghost Who Walks! Very Happy

I had surgery on my right leg when I was 12 to remove a benign bone tumor. It created 10" scare which I still have.

In my younger days when I used to cut a swath through the ladies, a few of them asked me about the scare when we were in a . . . private situation. I always gave the same answer.

"I got that in knife fight while I was Bangkok. It was brutal . . . but I won."

Bud and I did have the opportunity to view this movie together in the All-Scifi chat room and were positively glad we did! The film is beautifully composed and filmed in glorious widescreen B&W. Beverly Garlands performance is first rate as were those of the rest of the cast. Even Lon's drunken crazy guy was convincing (Although for Lon it was a bit of type casting!). The music was very Bernard Herman lite, but still very good.

The one thing that really impressed me was the cinematography....The camera shots and composition were excellent. Also the way the story was laid out had a very Alfred Hitchcockian feel.

The only real critisim of the film is the final "alligator man" makeup as previously pointed out. It certainly could have been better...Even if they used a real alligator head hollowed out as a mask...but it didn't really detract that much from the entire story. All and all it was an enjoyable hour and a quarter!
