I tried the Roku streaming stick after Bulldogtrekker got one for Christmas so we'd have a common source of movies and shows to chat about on Facebook while watching them on our own televisions.

However, we discovered that a large part of the content available through Roku are public domain movies and shows that aren't very tempting, along with a few good things that are available through other sources with better picture quality.

I gave it about a week and finally decided to send it back to Amazon. Bulldogtrekker wasn't overly impressed either, but he'd had his too long to return it. Sad

The bottom line is that I can't really recommend the Roku streaming stick.

That sort of thing can be the problem with much-hyped new gadgets or websites... they rely on public domain properties rather a lot, so that the masses of free movie, audiobooks, etc they promise just ends up raiding YouTube or the Internet Archive/Librivox...

I've got one of those Amazon Fire sticks plugged into the TV, which, along with a Prime subscription, means plenty of interesting extra television...if I can find the time! They've got Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (at least in Britain), though I've only watched the first episode so far. I think it must have been the pilot, as there was no sign of Goldie Hawn, though that was compensated for by having plenty of Barbara "Agent 99" Feldon. Strangely, it included an old ad for watches... I guess they must have been the original sponsor, making it technically part of the show.

My overdue comment about ROKU. I don't have any of the pay channels such as Netflix, Sling, Hulu or Now.

I like, but do not love, the ROKU. I was able to find Star Trek the Animated Series , Space:1999 and Joe 90. All I have to do is hit the microphone button, say Space:1999, and it will take me there. That is a great idea.

It works best on internet channels, such as ESPN 3. I am currently watching Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix practice 1 live on TV using the ROKU. I wonder if my friend Custer likes F1 racing?

As Bud already mention, most of the science fiction movies on the ROKU are public domain (and grade Z). I did find When Words Collide and Kronos.

I watched a little of Basic Instinct and the picture quality appeared to be excellent.

I was able to set my ROKU so I can easily see what time it is; my new cable box/DVR box no longer shows the time of day.

My wife paid $36 for the ROKU and I think it was worth it.

I have the Amazon Firestick and I love it! I have Netflix and Hulu subs tied into it and I have a FEAST of great movies and series at my fingertips!

I would NOT reccomend it for anyone who did not use either of these however.

Bulldogtrekker and I watched Lost in Space while chatting on Facebook, and we loved it!

Unfortunately Bulldogtrekker watched the first episode of Daredevil with me too, but he decided he was less impressed than I was. That might mean he'll choose not to watch all those other Netflix series which are related to Daredevil, like The Defenders.

Frankly, I understand his reasons. There are moments in Daredevil which are so dark and disturbing that they bother me, too.

However, I've got the all Daredevil related series on my Netflix list, and I'm looking forward to watching them. Hell's bells, I've got to do something to occupy my keen creative mind between now and the time season two of Lost in Space finally comes out! Shocked

The Daredevil-related Marvel shows can be a bit variable, but generally are pretty good. Season 2 of Jessica Jones was a bit slow to take off, and people seem to feel that the all-together Defenders series didn't live up to expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised by Punisher, and Luke Cage.

My only problem with the Amazon fire stick is that (unless I'm missing something) it isn't very easy to switch off. Wouldn't an "Off" button be a good idea, rather than having to hold down the "Home" button for a few seconds until a page appears where one can navigate to a "Sleep" icon and choose it?

I've not started the latest season of detective Bosch yet, but that should be good - though missing Seven of Nine, Jeri Ryan, I assume, this time. Comic-based series The Tick reminds me of a funnier Powers.

Ah, here's the Bosch cast, as at season two:
