No question, the show was lacking. Thats why it failed.
But it looked great while underperforming and had some great episodes. War Games, The Black Sun, and The Infernal Machine were great.
Just watching Martin Landau and Barry Morse acting together was worth the price of admission.
Barbara Bain was a disappointment though.
The rest of the cast was competent, as secondary players should be.
The second season was just a train wreck. Fred Freiberger proves again that he can kill a show! |

When I was a teenager in the 1960s I had a thing for mature women. Barbara Bain was one of them.
She had a smouldering beauty and a soft voice, and from time to time she would play a scene in Mission: Impossible that truly revved up my engine. A scene like this one, for example.
]
I Googled Miss Bain (wait . . . that doesn't sound right), ummm . . . I searched for a picture of Miss Bain to show how she didn't display much sex appeal in Space: 1999, but the one I liked best ended up making her look pretty good when I fixed it up a little for this post.
]
However, in the series all she ever got to wear was the somewhat "uni-sex" costume, which certainly never gave us a view of her legs like the one in the first picture above. . _________________ ____________

I'm not sure why she was so flat in Space, She was definitely capable of better. Of all the reading I have done, I've never read that it was the producers decision. I'm assuming that it was her choice to play Dr. Russell that way. I always thought that really hurt the show.
I think we saw Bains legs in "The Full Circle" when she was in Cave women garb.
One thing Space tried to be was much more metaphysical than any other Science show. I always thought this was a strange choice, but once you realize it, some episodes seem to make a bit more sense.
In a few episodes Victor makes the comment that there is a
higher power controlling the Alphan's path.
Overall the show is a product of the mid '70s, and shows it. |

As a big fan of M:I it surprised me just how undemonstrative Bain's performance was on Space: 1999.
Wonder if she was approaching from the angle that many doctors are reserved & serious individuals in real life & that's how she felt she should be as the chief medical officer on Moon Base Alpha? |

Pow, I think you're absolute right!
In Mission: Impossible she was the hot babe who distracted the guards and seduced the dictators so the other guys could execute The Plan.
In Space: 1999 she was the serious intellectual medical professional who made sure that biological threats didn't turn all the people into gelatinous masses! _________________ ____________

What's the matter with you guys? Space: 1999 was fantastic! The moon's course through space and reaching planets within a few weeks was explained by it's encounters with space warps and a black sun! If the channels screening it put the episodes not in the correct order as such then that's their fault and not yours for not getting with the show!
For me I loved it and the weird order it was shown each and every time it was on in the 70s and 80s! Plus how could anyone not enjoy Dragon's Domain?

Some of the objections to the show which are described by members above might just arm me against having the wrong expectations, so I'll be able to appreciate it better. _________________ ____________

Loved the ships and Moonbase tech.....BUT the stories were sadly lacking. If you forget about all that and figure...it's just a story, turn off your brain and just watch it...I guess it's not so bad! _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

The Alphans believed that their course through space was being guided by an unseen intelligence! In one episode they sort of make contact with this entity and from then on it's like in their thoughts! In the second series they forgot about all that and threw logic out of the window!

Yes, today I looked up Space: 1999 on Wikipedia and read that the screenwriters introduced the idea that the Moon was being steered around the cosmos for some mysterious reason by an "unseen intelligence".
Well, ummm . . . I'm sorry, but frankly that just doesn't cut it, story wise.
If this unseen intelligence is just a vague reference to a god-like entity that was stuck in to explain why the Moon could act like a starship which could "boldly go where no Moon has gone before", I feel a bit cheated.
I don't want a story about people who have no control over their destiny, much less no control over the "vehicle" they're zooming around in! The beauty of Star Trek is that mankind built the Enterprise, mankind explores the galaxy in the Enterprise, and mankind decides where the Enterprise is headed for next!
That's what made Star Trek sexy and exciting. And that's why I do NOT like Deep Space Nine. The space station is just a man-made moon that doesn't go anywhere!
Sorry, but Space: 1999's basic premise was about as appealing as a movie called Han Solo Takes a Desk Job.
That's just my own opinion, of course. _________________ ____________

I recently rewatched the first few episodes again after not viewing them for quite a few years. What struck me....and may explain Barbara Bain's and others performances...is that it felt like they were going for a 2001: ASO vibe.
Also from a visual perspective the sets, the hardware and even the ships had a 2001 feeling that I had never connected before.
As the show goes on, the performances opened up quite a bit and by the second season the stories were just so poorly done anything the actors could have done was a waste. _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

I found a 49-minute documentary to replace the two 60-minute videos I posted just one month ago, darn it.
The comments below are about the former videos and probably don't apply to the new one (I haven't watched it yet), but I left them here because the comments are self-explanatory and I like the screen shots.

I especially enjoyed the apart about the episode that involved flooding the entire sound stage with soap bubbles that were supposed to be an alien life form!
These photos don't do it justice. Watch the video at the 41:40 mark and listen to the cast members tell the hilarious story.
