This is the kind of movie I like -- a bold blend of comedy and action. Sylvester Stallone is a supercop who is wrongly blamed for causing the deaths of busload of hostages held by homicidal maniac Wesley Snipes.

They both end up cryogenically frozen by the near-future penal system, and when they're thawed out decades later, the world has become a strange place indeed. Crime has ceased to exist, and the citizens are like the offspring of Valley Girls who mated the Eloi men!

Rough-and-tough Sylvester and psychopathic Wesley are wolves among sheep -- which results in wild action and wicked comedy.

Fun show, especially the product placement and allusions to pop culture. Never understood how the sea shells worked, though.

The sea shells? Oh, those are easy to use! Let me explain.

You see, first you touch the one in the middle three times, then the one on the right two time, and finally the one on the left one time.

When you do that, you'll notice a very pleasant — damn, I'm sorry. I gotta run to the rest room! I'll finish my explanation when I get back. I promise. Very Happy

Meanwhile, enjoy the trailer.

I see Wikipedia comments that "Some aspects of the film allude to Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel, Brave New World." As the mention earlier of the Eloi suggests, I'm more inclined to think of it as a kind of prequel to The Time Machine, with the surface-dwellers starting to go along the Eloi route, with the to-be-Morlocks below.

Any society where Sandra Bullock is the toughest cop on the force has to be a bit laid-back, to say the least. We are more than halfway to 2032 now...

She may not have been the toughest, but she was certainly the hottest! Wink

That's true. I must confess a weakness for many of her movies... Very Happy

I always thought that this movie was a sort of homage to JUDGE DREDD.

Sandra Bullock's character was called Lieutenant Lenina Huxley. Wikipedia notes that "Lori Petty was originally cast as Huxley but was replaced by, a then relatively unknown, Sandra Bullock after two days of filming due to what producer Joel Silver described as 'creative differences'". The character was named after Aldous Huxley, the author of Brave New World, and Lenina Crowne, a character in that novel.

I can see where the reference to Judge Dredd is coming from - well, in the 1995 movie Sly Stallone did play that character, after all, and having Nigel Hawthorne as a main character, fourth in the billing, does add a bit of a British vibe. Though Judge Dredd's British-made comics adventures are generally set in North America, of course...

Talking about different characters for the main roles, I see that Jackie Chan was offered the Simon Phoenix part, but didn't want to play a villainous character - while Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were offered lead roles in the film. Looking further down the cast list, Adrienne Barbeau was, uncredited, a computer voice, while Jack Black was 'Wasteland Scrap'!

IMDB has 130 trivia items for this movie, but not many of were interesting. Here's the few that were, in the blue text. Very Happy
________________________________

Sylvester Stallone wanted Simon Phoenix to be played by Jackie Chan. Chan declined, since Asian audiences don't like the idea of actors who have always played heroes suddenly playing evil characters.

Note from me: I agree that Jackie would NOT be a good choice for the villain.

During filming, Rob Schneider became friends with Sandra Bullock, but had reservations about her next project, "some bus movie" that he didn't think would take off. Speed (1994) was one of the next year's most critically and financially successful movies.

Note from me: You can never tell what will be a hit just by reading a script or a treatment. Too many variables. Very Happy

Rob Schneider played a police phone operator in this movie. He co-starred as Sylvester Stallone's sidekick in Judge Dredd (1995).

Note from me: Schneider is a funny guy. He has been in enough movies to suit me. Very Happy
