Interestingly, Bud, Silvera was going to be presented in the first half of the series season as evil.

However, Silvera was going to undergo an emotional transformation and would come to sympathize with the humans . . . even long to become one of 'em.

She would eventually pledge to assist the Resistance.

It would have been her aide that would have been crucial to tipping the balance against Lord Dread.

Falcor was another unrealized concept.

Falcor was a bio-dread Falcon created by Lord Dread & completely loyal to Dread.

Falcor could fly and act as a scout/spy for LD.

It could see and hear things which LD could also see through Falcor's eyes using the Interlock Chair.Falcor could also play back overheard conversations.

Falcor had a small arsenal of missiles within its deadly wings.

Today I looked for any online indications that the reboot, Captain Power: Phoenix Rising, might still be in development, but I found nothing later than some 2016 announcements and articles.

Apparently it ain't going to happen. Sad

That's a shame, Bud.

The show still has enormous potential with its story possibilities.

With today's state of the art cgi, as well as other special/visual FX advancements, it would be fantastic to view.

I loved the interactive feature of the videos! My sons and I spent many hours with the vehicles and the tapes doing battle with the dominions of Lord Dread! We went through tons of batteries trying to keep up with the games!

We had all the ships and VHS tapes and we played for hours on our living room floor trying to liberate the galaxy!

Todays "video games" (Or however they're called!) don't seem to have the ability to bring together generations....They seem to exclude groups to isolate the individual player.

My God, you are indeed my "brother from another mother"!

Our whole family (of four) had our own Captain Power ships too, and we spent hours watching tapes of the shows and using the toys to battle Lord Dread!

[

Notice the custom detailing which was created from the sheets of red stickers which came with the toys. We all decorated our ships with the fragments that were left over after the real stickers had been peeled away. Wink

Here's two other ships which I still own fly high above the Robby you gave me, with significantly different custom details.

And we often turned out the lights in our house and raced back and forth between the bedrooms and the kitchen, firing as we flew passed each other in opposite directions, with our ships switched to "room" mode so we could score hits and deactivate our opponents! Very Happy

Yes, indeed, modern video games do not give families a chance to interact in this wonderful manner. Cool

The Planned Second Season of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future

In a Starlog Magazine interview from January of 1989 with Larry DiTillio and Gary Goddard, they laid out the planned 2nd season of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future without the involvement of Mattel and their demands for interactive laser battles.

Without Mattel's requirements and toy, the show and setting would have been reshaped to focus more on the post-apocalypse/robot revolt elements, with increased maturity.

With the destruction of the Power Base and the death of Jennifer "Pilot" Chase, Captain Power is a broken man and the remains of his team are playing a running battle with Dread forces — with Hawk as their leader.

The objectives of the machine empire has have changed, and they are now on a campaign to kill the remains of humanity. Lord Dread himself would have gone from cyborg to completely robotic, thus marking the end of the role for the actor.

While looking for a new base, the team would interact with those in Eden II, the human resistance, and others in the post-Metal Wars societies, like Tech-Town.

During the 2nd season, the character of Tank would have more involvement with the new member of the Power team, the female "Ranger", who would have been his love interest.

Another female character would have been added for Dread, an android that would have been involved with the character of Scout.

Then there was the hinted possibility for Sauron to leave the machine empire and join up with the human side of the war!

Another hint was that Larry DiTillio, who called the show's title "the worst title for a TV show ever created", was thinking about changing the title of the show to appeal to more adults and get the "kid's show" label away from Captain Power.

How close was the production team to the 2nd season?

There were 18 scripts finished, and the series Bible was updated when Mattel pulled out in the winter of 1988. This lead to Landmark Entertainment's now disgraced Gary Goddard to seek new investors in the show as late as the winter of 1989, but it was a fruitless hunt.

The planned 2nd season never materialized, but Landmark was able to re-acquire the rights to the first season of the show.

Sadly, it would have been extremely difficult to get Captain Power off of the ground again in 1989 due to the majority of the production crew and actors moving on to new jobs.

Obviously we're never going to get a revival of the original series — for several reasons.

~ The original actors are now too old reprise their roles.

~ The 1980s flavor of the show would not be accepted by modern audiences.

~ The aging fans of the original series (like me) would not be comfortable with a version which was designed for a much younger generation.

Have said all that, I'm sure a reboot would be spectacular! Very Happy

However . . . it wouldn't be something which most of us original fans could accept and enjoy. Sad

Never say never regarding reboots, Bud.

In the right hands a brand new Captain Power And His Soldiers Of The Future could be fantastic. Especially with the enormous advances in special & visual effects in recent years.

I realize that it is not always easy to revive a show from the past. You want to stay true and pay homage to the elements which made it so special in the first place, but at the same time you want to update it for today's audience---both old and new.

Two reboots that have impressed the hell out of me have been Battlestar Galactica & Lost In Space.

The original versions were not all that great to me.

However, the new iterations are terrific.

Sure, other reboots of former TV series failed more often than not.

The Wild Wild West was a marvelous sf steampunk TV series that I really enjoyed.

Some years after its cancellation they tried two TWWW TV-movies with Bob Conrad and Ross Martin reprising their characters of agents James West & Artemus Gordon.

The first movie wasn't too bad but it definitely was not in the same vein as the original 60's series. The second movie was awful.

The 1965~'69 show played it straight amidst the anachronistic gadgets and larger than life villains.
There was humor but never at the expense of the show's formula or characters.

The later TV-movies went overboard. Now the attitude was that it was all so silly and improbable in design that we won't take it seriously. I was half expecting West & Gordon to turn to the audience and wink. Maybe even step out of character and say to the camera that not to take any of this for real. Just laugh.

It became foolish and camp. No fans of the series can stand the TV-movies even with Conrad & Martin resuming their roles.

Yeah, reboots can stink and totally miss the flavor and fun of the original series.

There also can be exceptions to the rule. BG & LIS certainly proved that fact.

So there's always hope that a Captain Power revival could be quite good and maybe even surpass the original.

Like I say, Bud, never say never,

Forgive me, Pow, but your comment sort of made my point for me. The examples you used of successful reboots were for series which you (and I) feel were unsuccessful.

My contention above was that Captain Power succeeded in the 1980s, but it would have to be so different today to appeal to modern audiences that we old timers just wouldn't care for it.

Captain Power definitely suffered because of the disappointing special effects — and as you said, that particular problem could be greatly improved in a new version. But the flavor of the show was magnificently noble — and today's audiences might consider that as pure corn, I'm afraid. Sad

I'm not saying a remake would necessarily be bad, I'm just saying it would be designed for an audience who is now one full generation after mine.

That's why I said, "Obviously we're never going to get a revival of the original series . . . "

We might get a reboot of the concept, but that's not quite the same as revival.
Sad

The problem with the "Wild, Wild West" movies is that they did them on the cheap. They would have needed much larger budgets to match the look of the TV show. They figured they could cover the defects with humor. Although I can think of two good exchanges in the first TV movie. Sad as they were, they were still head and shoulders above the theatrical film.

But then that was the problem with the TV reunion shows back then. They'd hired the casts (those that were still alive, or would return), but not spend the money to match the original show.

All very true, David.

But whenever Hollywood tries to bring back the magic of a show that was adored several decades earlier, they're desperately hoping that the aging audience who loved this productions several decades earlier will love the new versions just as much! Shocked

That effort is domed to failure.

The fans of the old shows have not been in a comma for the last twenty years. They've gotten older, and their views about life, the world, and everything else have drastically changed!

It's pointless to expect the 1950s Baby Boomers to have the same warm feelings for the movies and TV shows they loved back then . . . or the Oldies rock songs they cherished . . . or the teenage girls they had crushes on! Very Happy

"Reboots" are for the current generation — not the previous one. The fans who loved the originals might actually like the new versions . . . but only if they're willing to accept the striking changes which today's culture has imposed.

The problem with most "reboots", is that the people making them have little or no respect for the original. They say they do, but the end product makes that a lie. Those making the reboot seem to think that they know better, and want to do "their version" or "their vision", that is more often than not clueless about what made the original work.

See the dumpster fires made from "The Lone Ranger" (BOTH TIMES!), "The Wild, Wild West", "The Green Hornet" or "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", where there WAS NO U.N.C.L.E. ORGANIZATION!*

David.

* Yes, I'm still bitter over the last two movies. Oh who am I kidding, I'm still bitter over all of them. Laughing
