Mckenna Grace Books Lead Role in Sony’s Ghostbusters Sequel

https://www.thewrap.com/mckenna-grace-ghostbusters/

Mckenna Grace, last seen playing a young Carol Danvers in Marvel Studio’s Captain Marvel, has booked the lead role in Sony’s Ghostbusters sequel, an individual with knowledge of the project tells The Wrap.

Sony has slated Jason Reitman’s sequel to be released on July 20, 2020.

The story centers on a single mom and her children. Mckenna Grace will play the daughter, while Carrie Coon is in talks to play the mom, and Finn Wolfhard is in talks to play her son.

Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, who directed and produced the original Ghostbusters 1984 film, will write, direct and produce. The currently untitled film will go into production this summer.

Described as “the next chapter” in the story started in 1984, it will involve the passing of a torch to a new generation of paranormal investigators. It will be the second official sequel following 1988’s Ghostbusters 2.

The film will have no connection to the 2016 film directed by Paul Feig that starred Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

The original Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver, made $242.2 million in lifetime grosses domestically and more than $295 million worldwide.

Grace is currently starring in Amazon’s coming-of-age movie Troop Zero and can be seen opposite Kiefer Sutherland in ABC’s Designated Survivor. Her film co-starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, Annabelle Comes Home, opens June 28.

Grace is repped by Paradigm, Management 360 and Hansen Jacobson.

Sigourney Weaver Will Return as Dana Barrett

https://movieweb.com/ghostbusters-3-sigourney-weaver-dana-barrett/

Sigourney Weaver is officially on board for Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters 3. There has been speculation about the original cast coming back to reprise their roles, and this seems to be the best indication that everybody is returning. Weaver, who turns 70 in October, was discussing upcoming roles, including the Avatar sequels, which will see her return to New Zealand in order to shoot the live-action portions with James Cameron and crew. She'll be playing a new character in the Avatar sequels since her original character was killed off in the first installment.

When speaking of other new projects she is excited about, Sigourney Weaver brought up Ghostbusters 3. "It's going to be crazy working with the guys again!" says Weaver. She would not go into further details about the highly anticipated sequel, other than the fact she is reprising her role as Dana Barrett. Dan Aykroyd has teased involvement in the sequel for years now and has hinted the rest of the surviving cast will be on board too, but this is the first official confirmation about an original cast member returning. Plus, she says, "the guys," so we can only assume everybody is on board. Hopefully Rick Moranis jumps on board to.

Bill Murray recently hinted he would be interested in returning to the Ghostbusters franchise. Murray considers himself, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson as the caretakers of the Ghostbusters and after having a cameo in the all-female reboot, he admitted he would be open to returning to Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters 3. Speaking of Reitman, he has announced he is preparing a pretty big surprise for this Saturday's (June 8, 2019) Ghostbusters Fan Fest, which could be the official cast reveal. In the announcement, the director included some old footage of Murray in between takes of the original movie.

Dan Aykroyd has been sworn to secrecy about Ghostbusters 3, but he is still talking about it quite openly. The actor has been the one to talk about anything having to do with the franchise over the years and he seems really excited about what Jason Reitman has prepared for the sequel. He recently had this to say about the sequel.

"Ivan Reitman's son Jason has written a beautiful script, I can't say too much about it but it's going to get made and hopefully there'll be some familiar faces. It's so different from even the first and second (film). This just takes it to a new generation and a new direction that is so warm, heartfelt and indeed, quite scary when you confront some of the issues that are being discussed."

It is believed production on Ghostbusters 3 will begin on July 14, 2019 in Calgary, Canada. It is expected to wrap on October 7, 2019. With Ghostbusters Fan Fest happening this weekend, we should get a pretty substantial update from Jason Reitman. As for now, the surprise is a mystery. At least we know that Sigourney Weaver is officially going to play Dana Barrett in the highly anticipated sequel. The interview with Weaver was originally conducted by Parade Magazine.

I started wondering if somebody might "call me out" for not moving this thread to Movies in Other Genres, but then I realized that even though the "ghosts" element of the plot is not sci-fi, the team of Ghostbusters handle the strange entities they capture using scientific means!

So, does the presence of the ghosts in the plot mean this can't be considered sci-fi?

Ah, but wouldn't that be the same as arguing that the science gizmos the team uses automatically disqualifies it as fantasy?

Besides, maybe all the ghosts are really from outer space!

Ghostbusters 2020 First Look: Jason Reitman Reveals the Film’s Family As Production Begins

https://www.slashfilm.com/ghostbusters-2020-first-look-jason-reitman-reveals-the-films-family-as-production-begins/

Posted on Saturday, July 13th, 2019 by Ethan Anderton

Before the weekend, Ghostbusters 2020 director Jason Reitman teased the return of the Ecto-1 with a photo showing that the paranormal investigation wagon probably needed a little love to get it back into shape. But he saved an even better look at the forthcoming sequel for later in the day with a Ghostbusters 2020 first look photo revealing cast members Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Carrie Coon as the family at the center of the story.

Mckenna Grace looks like she’ll make quite the new Ghostbusters 2020, which is good since Reitman’s entire inspiration for this movie came when he envisioned a 12-year old girl sporting a proton pack. Grace has a look that feels reminiscent of Egon Spengler in the original Ghostbusters. Is there any chance that this family turns out to be connected to Harold Ramis’ character? Perhaps he had an estranged daughter who never knew him.

As you can see in the photo posted to Twitter, the film’s working title is Rust City. That title was used to develop the project in secret, but if you zoom into that photo, you’ll notice that the trademark ghost logo from the original Ghostbusters is peaking out from behind that triangle in the title on the slate.

The slate also reveals that Eric Steelberg is acting as director of photography on the movie. He’s worked with Jason Reitman on nearly every single one of his movies, from Juno in 2007 to last year’s Tully. The only movie that Steelberg didn’t shoot for Reitman was his directorial debut Thank You for Smoking.

Aside from the main characters at the center of Ghostbusters 2020, this photo is also a family affair because original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is there on set with his son. The senior Reitman is only producing this time, but he’s been preparing the young Reitman for this job his whole life. In case you missed it, Jason Reitman gave quite a touching tribute to his father when the two of them showed never-before-seen production footage to attendees of Ghostbusters 2020 Fan Fest.

So it’s safe to say that production is underway, and since Reitman’s photo of the Ecto-1 from earlier in the day indicated that he’s up in Calgary, Alberta in Canada, that’s likely where this neighborhood shot comes from. Maybe we’ll get some spy photos from the set to reveal even more from the movie. Then again, maybe Jason Reitman will keep updating us with photos from the set, especially when the sequel’s legacy cast members start showing up. Stay tuned for more.

Ghostbusters 2020 starts haunting theaters on July 10, 2020.
