I'd make a poor judge for this category, because FX are so awesome these days it would be hard to pick one!

Whenever I read something about the CGI looking "bad" in a movie I've seen, I usually wonder why I was so impressed with the FX if they weren't good! Confused

But I will say this; now that science fiction is finally getting the respect it deserves, I'm delighted to see all those sci-fi movies on the list! Cool

Frankly it still galls me that The Ten Commandments' FX beat Forbidden Planet for the Oscar in 1956. The special effects in that Biblical epic are NOT as good as Forbidden Planet.

I think God rigged the voting . . . Confused

"Marooned" receiving the Best SFX award over "Krakatoa East Of Java" was also absurd.

Ray Harryhausen said that one of his films was not nominated for an Oscar because the expert nominating committee members thought that his stop~motion animation was someone inside a body suit.

Here's a thought, guys and dolls: Have SFX experts as part of the nominating committee on SFX.

Not likely to happen. As in all of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscars) matters you have to be a member of the appropriate union AND an AMPAS member to vote.
