I would take it, Bud, that you're suggesting that the FORBIDDEN PLANET version of the DC stations were precursors for STAR TREK transporters.

Interesting.

Way back in 1980 BANTAM BOOKS published a package called STAR TREK MAPS.

Included in the package was a 32 page booklet listing all the known star systems and planets known to the FEDERATION since its' inception. In it was listed Altairs' fourth planet and the former existance of the Krell was mentioned. So perhaps the idea is not so far fetched as it may appear. The civilization the C-57d found on Altair IV was acknowledged as part of the ST canon.

Star Trek Maps is a reference work demonstrating the stellar cartography and navigation system featured on the Star Trek television series, written from an in-universe perspective.
It was published by Bantam Books in August 1980, and licensed by Paramount Pictures.

The box set included four four-color wall maps, and an instructional booklet from the "Technical Publications Section" of Starfleet Command Introduction to Navigation (booklet): Labelled with an in-universe document number: TM:3001499-03, as published by the Technical Publications Section of Starfleet Command.

The text includes historical background, explanations of warp travel, navigation within the Federation, a briefing on course calculations, which include vector calculus, a table of corrections for warp speed designations.

Another link between FORBIDDEN PLANET and STAR TREK is the ST episode REQUIEM FOR METHUSALAH.

According to fantasy and science fiction scholar Ace G. Pilkington, Requiem for Methuselah is a Star Trek adaptation of the film Forbidden Planet (1956).

Actress Anne Francis reported that Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, had talked to her about lifting some ideas from Forbidden Planet.

Actor Leslie Nielsen noted the similarities between Forbidden Planet and Star Trek, suggesting that the film served as a pilot for the television series.

Ruth Morse, a Shakespearean scholar, has written on the influence of The Tempest on Forbidden Planet and Requiem for Methuselah.

Flint, the powerful recluse, seems to be based on Prospero and Methuselah. Rayna appears to be Flint's daughter and is based on Miranda, Prospero's daughter.

These are the ST versions of Morbius and Altaria...Shakespeare's Prospero and Miranda.

The twist here is that "Rayna-Miranda" (as Morse calls her) is an android, not Flint's daughter. Flint hopes that the female android will fall in love with him. Flint offers her knowledge and intellectual stimulation but Rayna falls for the "irresistible" James T. Kirk.

The female android faces new and (to her) unfamiliar emotions, having to choose between two men. The pressure causes her to short-circuit into self-destruction, her version of death.

So the concept of the DC stations relation to STAR TREK's transporter/replicators may be valid.

And I would know that because.....

I'm officialy Starfleet!

Holy Moly, Maurice, you certainly gave this thread a booster shot!

Thanks! Cool

The painting by Irving Block of the C-57-D on the surface is interesting because the "landing pedestal" appears to be depicted as the spiral staircase we see in of the production sketches for the movie, as shown below from the Cinefantastique article.

Glad to be of service.

There's some other fun sci-fi/fantasy stuff in that auction catalog.

IT's about time to release a few more from the "vault" !

The harness used to hold up Robby...

A few blueprints...

And random shots of the Party Animal...

With his "daddy"

And...Home, sweet home!

Bud, and Gord, and Eadie, and who else? Sorry if I left anyone out.

I really have been overwhelmed with all the nice things everyone who has welcomed me to All Sci-Fi have had to say to and about myself.

But, at the same time I am overwhelmed by threads that go on page after page after page, like this one on Forbidden Planet, which seems to be the largest number of pages devoted to a single film, well over 100.

I know Bud said, in the first page, he was re-posting things he had posted to CHFB, but I don't think I've yet checked out the Forbidden Planet on that message board but intend to do so.

So far, I have limited my posting to threads of only a page or two, with 5 pages being a Very Long Thread.

But, Over 100 pages!

How should a Rookie on this board approach catching up on the Forbidden Planet thread.

I saw it in early 1973, on WWAY-TV, channel 3 from Wilmington NC, on the Late Show. on a very small portable BW TV set, pan and scan of course, alththough it was then making the rounds in my neck of the woods as an afternoon MGM Kiddie movie, which I saw the trailers for in color and on a big movie house screen, as it was intended to be viewed, and I was highly impressed.

Anyway, I don't know if I can ever read all the pages of this thread, or not!

And, if I did, how long it would take ! ! ! ? ? ?

Oh, well, tp all of you other Astrogators (wasn't that what the Forbidden Planet spaceship crew called themselves, rather than "astronauts?"): Keep Up the Great Work!

FD, I think Bud would agree with me, that the FORBIDDEN PLANET thread is one of the proudest achievements here on All Sci-Fi!

Don't let the amount of pages hold you back....wade right in! Some posts are rather ephemeral and you can breeze right through them. Others are very deep and thought provoking... some are full of glorious images you can feast your eyes on ...and then move on to the next.

Some you can save and come back to later. (And....there were another five or so intense pages relating to "The Great Morbius House Discussion" that were lost during a computer glitch a year or so ago!).

Your remembrance of your first viewing of this movie is EXACTLY what this board treasures the most! Your reactions and perceptions are images that transcend any others that you may post.

We've always wished that there was a deeply researched, fully illustrated book about FORBIDDEN PLANET, but really, if some smart editor took the 100 plus pages of this thread and edited it down to a book it would be the ultimate reference to FP in existence!

So add your thoughts! There's always room for more!

Astrogator was the job of only ONE person: Lieutenant Gerald "Jerry" Purcival Farman played by John "Jack" Augustus Kelly Jr. (September 16, 1927 – November 7, 1992) [The character's full name is from the novelization.]

astrogator (plural astrogators)

Noun: One who navigates through space as opposed to celestial navigation by using the positions of the stars and other heavenly bodies on the surface of a planet.

The crewmen and officers were members of the United Planet Federation Patrol.

(See? More information — Eadie!)
