Jeez, why didn't I think of this?

Put rockets on the ends of helicopter blades and --- Voila! -- a rocket-copter!

Wait. Should it be a heli-rocket? I can't decide. Confused

Anyway, this wild contraption starts out looking like one of those funny silent films from the 1920 that show crazy ideas for insane helicopters and one-man airplanes, but after the rockets finish smoking like crazy and the pilot lifts off, it starts to look like a pretty good idea. Very Happy

A steam powered helicopter! It is powered just like the Bell Rocket Belt, with hydrogen-peroxide.

Call the Steampunk folks.

I was curious about the use of a tail rotor. With a torqueless main rotor, they should have been able to rotate with a simple vane to deflect the wash left or right. Maybe a secondary rotor provides better response?

Excellent point!

Without a standard motor that would cause the helicopter to rotate in the opposite direction of the blades, the tail rotor isn't needed to prevent that.

But of course, the tail rotor also controls the direction the helicopter is facing, and your clever suggestion for doing that another way seems perfectly reasonable.

Good, thinkin', Wayne! Very Happy

Actually, I was remembering my model kit of the Hiller Hornet, back in my kid days.
