A new mystery!!! Dr. Morbius' Study:

But WHAT is this device behind the lamp?:

Any thoughts or ideas? (See, I've started a new discussion! It pays to be observant.)

Doesn't really look like a "device" as much as a glass bowl of Krellian potpourri!

Looks like leaves from the Altarian Frutex ….Very fragrant!

Yes, indeed, Miss Eadie — you are the the eagle-eyed mistress of All Sci-Fi when it comes to spotting details in Forbidden Planet that us older folks have missed for over 60 years!

This newest object certainly does look like a glass bowl with something red in it. And the very fact that such a simple and unexpected object would be on the desk next to Morbius makes it all the more puzzling! Confused

Still, the Morbius house is filled with decorative objects, so this glass bowl with the gold rim might be nothing more than that. But I always enjoy finding out about details of Forbidden Planet's amazing sets!

Here's another angle, but it doesn't offer any more details —
other than the way it appears that the red might be a pattern of decorative shapes on the glass, either inside or outside.

Zoom in close and let me know what you guys think.

Another question.....Just WHAT does Morbius have in this brass box? Altarian snuff? Some artifacts of the Krell? Altair's best pipe tobacco?

Maybe the ashes of his dead wife?

And those two old books? Obviously from Earth...but what titles?

Good Lord, how did you get that incredible close-up of those objects on Morbius' desk? Shocked

Unfortunately my 2001 Toshiba laptop will only make screen shots from DVDs, not from Blu-rays. Is that the source you used for that wonderful close-up? Very Happy

I noticed those objects in the picture Eadie posted, but I couldn't post anything better, so I didn't mention them or post a close-up. But like you, I wondered what the gold objects and the books are. Very Happy

Bud, I used Eadie's picture...cropped and used Irfanview's sharpen/enhancement feature.

I've used Irfanview for years to handle all my images. You can resize, sharpen, color correct both automaticly and by command, greyscale, cut, crop and outherwise manipulate images. I love it....wouldn't use any other.

Great! Don't forgot to resize to 700. I know it's a pain, but they're to large on my computer for the text if they're larger. Very Happy

Thanks!

The bowl is probably a decorative ashtray that the set dresser placed there for visual interest.

I've never smoked, but I have several of my Parents ashtrays I use for other purposes. It's funny, after my Parents stopped smoking, they used their ashtrays as candy dishes.

Isn't it it interesting that nobody smokes in the movie? Being the 50s you would have expected the someone on the crew to smoke. But there is no hint of the then, wildly popular habit in the movie.

Another way F.P. was ahead of it's time?

David.

Unfortunately it's a PC program. I have a Mac.

I do. Of course now you mean 800....But I try to remember. Not all the images I save are intended to post...So when I do intend to post them I try to adjust them. Sometimes....I hesitate to claim being Human....But sometimes It slips through!

No, actually I do mean 700. I know 800 looks good on most folks' monitors, but I'm requesting 700, please.

If 700 pixel images don't fill your display, you can zoom in just slightly to make the image fit the screen, and doing this also makes the text a bit larger and easy to read. Smile

However, with an image larger than 700, some folks (like me) with smaller displays have to zoom out to see the whole picture — which makes the text smaller and less easy to read. (Especially for old guys like me who stare at their laptop for hours until their eyes get tired. Rolling Eyes)

I apologize for making this request. I hope it's a fair compromise between the needs of various members who have differently sized displays, or who have adjusted the DPI of their displays to a larger size than the default (which I've done).

Thanks for being so considerate and cooperative.
Very Happy

________________________________

Today I had a enjoyable phone conversation with long-time All Sci-Fi member Bob Tarmac — the man who redesigned our logo to improve it dramatically just before I ordered the first batch of free T-shirts, several years ago.

For years, Bob has been composing music in the tradition of Louis and Bebe Baron and presenting his compositions on a website called SoundCloud.com. I often play them on my laptop while reading and replying to posts on All Sci-Fi.

During our conversation I bragged about how Eadie frequently spotted small details in Forbidden Planet that the rest of have missed for decades!

Bob told me to offer Eadie a challenge! Cool

He said to tell her to "Find the dragon in Forbidden Planet." He claims it's right out in plain site. I have no idea what he means, but I'm intrigued by his statement!

Bob has been absent from All Sci-Fi for quite a while, but he promised he'd join us soon, and I'd love to greet him with the solution to his challenge.

A dragon? Like . . . Wow! Shocked
