Joe 90 was one of the many puppet television series produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in the United Kingdom.

The show debuted there on Sunday, September 29th, 1968 and ran to Sunday, March 23rd, 1969 for a total of 30 episodes.

Premise } In the year 2012, the World Intelligence Network (W.I.N.) has managed to unite many of the world's secret service agencies into one vast intelligence organization.

WIN battles the Eastern Alliance which is a loosely organized group of countries governed by ruthless dictators and military juntas.

WIN also combats gun-runners, saboteurs, extortionists, evil scientists, fraudulent businessmen, and terrorists.

Joe McClaine is only nine-years old but he is also WIN's Most Special Agent.

His father is the brilliant scientist Professor Ian 'Mac' McClaine. Mac has created the Big Rat machine (Brain Impulse Galvanascope Record and Transfer).

This fantastic computer is capable of storing the recorded brain impulses of specialists in any known field of expertise.
Big Rat then can transfer whatever skill set is required for a WIN mission to Joe who is able to draw upon the knowledge and experience of any professional via high-tech glasses with built-in electrodes.

Joe 90 (Joe's WIN code name) then embarks on highly dangerous missions as directed by WIN agents Sam Loover and Shane Weston.

To assist Joe 90 on his missions he carries a normal looking school bag. In reality it is a specialized agent attache case concealing an automatic pistol, two-way radio~communicator, a WIN agent's badge, and his electrode glasses.

There are also various other types of espionage equipment in the 'school bag' all disguised as toys.

Big Rat is top secret and highly classified and is only known to Joe, Mac, Sam, and Shane.

The incredible computer is hidden in Mac's secret lab built in ancient sea tunnels just under the quaint old Tutor cottage that Mac & Joe live in.

In order to receive the required brain patterns, Joe must sit in a chair inside the Rat Trap which is a spinning spherical cage. The Psychedelic Traumascope then prepares Joe's brain for the induction of the recorded electronic impulses.

Mac has invented the Jet Air Car which can travel on land, in the air or on water and sometimes is used for missions.

Well, once you get past the ignoring of child endangerment laws, Joe 90 is quite a fun and well produced TV show.

The concept of Joe being able to mentally adopt the skills of any profession via Big Rat is a nifty one.
And having a nine-year old boy as a top secret agent would allow easily fool any enemies of WIN. Who would be on the lookout for a kid?

Derek Meddings once again created the phenomenal models and effects for the show with his usual high standards.

Clever and entertaining, Joe 90 remains one of the finest TV series done by the Andersons.

IMDB only has 6 trivia items for this series, but several of them are quite interesting. Here they are below in the blue text. Very Happy

~ The device used to transfer the brain patterns of various experts in their fields, brain surgeons, fighter pilots etc in to Joe was called the B.I.G. R.A.T. which stood for Brain Impulse Galvanoscope Record And Transfer.

Note from me: Strange choice for the name. Confused

~ According to Gerry Anderson, the plot of Joe 90 was based around Gerry's pre-Supermarionation days when he served as an assistant editor for such films as The Wicked Lady (1945), handling recording tape on a daily basis.

While pondering on the blanking and re-use of such tape, Anderson made a connection to the human brain's electrical activities.

As he would later explain, "I read somewhere that the human brain is controlled by electrical impulses and how thoughts are stored electronically. I started toying with the story potential of a process that would allow the recording of brain patterns and transferring them to another brain. I was really likening it to magnetic recording, where material could be stored or transferred to another tape."


Note from me: In Arthur C. Clark's collection of short stories called Tales from the White Hart" he describes a device that records sensory input which could be replayed by anyone. The movie Brainstorm made extensive use of the same concept.

And I've written an unpublished novel set in the near-fuiture about a private detective who uses a commercially sold device about the size of an iPod to record his experiences 24/7 and allow himself to "rerun' anything that's happened to him, which gives him a perfect memory.

The novel is called Time Saving Device.

~ Joss Whedon's short-lived TV series Dollhouse (2009) had the same premise as Joe 90. In that series, the series main protagonist Echo, a secret agent has skills downloaded into her mind for missions.

Trivia } "Joe 90" was a change of pace from Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's earlier TV shows.

Joe 90 focused more on characters than sf technology although there certainly was sf tech and elements in episodes but not as much as one would see on "Thunderbirds" or "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons."

The plots on Joe 90 were more espionage oriented than sf.

The more lifelike looking puppets that were first created for CS&TM and continued on for Joe 90 made Gerry Anderson feel that it was possible for the puppets to carry the story.
The reliance on flashy hardware was lessened.

The reruns of the previous Anderson puppet shows made it imperative to make Joe 90 appear different from those earlier series. That was another reason to play down the tech on Joe 90.

Joe, Mac and Mrs.Harris were puppets created specifically for Joe 90 while other puppets for the show were revamped from CS&TM.

Monday, November 13th, 1967 was the very first day of filming for Joe 90.

Gerry Anderson was not as deeply involved in the day-today production of Joe 90 as he had been on all his previous puppet TV series.

Gerry was supervising the post-production of "Thunderbird 6" and then was busy with his live action film of "Doppleganger" aka "Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun."

So work on those two films kept him away from Joe 90 and director David Lane took on the role of producer for Joe 90.


I always was impressed by Joe 90 and thought that it was one of the Anderson's finer TV shows.

The concept was very imaginative and intriguing.

Even though the show was focusing more on the puppet characters and a less on the hardware, the legendary Derek Meddings still managed to create fantastic looking models for the series.

Interestingly, Bruce Geller the late creator of Mission: Impossible had a project he wanted to do after the end of M:I.

Working with writer Steve Kandel, it was about a man who took on the identity of other people.
Bruce wanted somebody who, by use of plastic surgery, hypnotherapy, and computer training, takes on the persona of another person.

Bruce wanted someone who took other people's identities and mastered, manipulated, and controlled them, and was secure while manipulating the false identity.

Kandel wrote somebody who immerses himself in the mind and soul of another human being, and then finds himself trapped in another person's mind. What Kandel presented to Geller aroused very deep anxieties.

Bruce's reaction was so visceral that it was staggering. It was personally alarming to him that somebody could become trapped in another person's mind. The Complete Mission: Impossible Dossier by Patrick J. White.

~ Geller's concept certainly is similar to both Joe 90 & Doll House. If it did indeed come about after M:I's cancellation which was 1973, then this idea came after Joe 90's first episode which was 1969.

Kandel's script sounds like it would have been infused with as much psychodrama as espionage. Ultimately, Kandel's take on the premise was different from Geller's idea and the project never moved forward.

In the late 70s (early 80s?) there was a pilot about a man who could have information and abilities implanted into his mind. I think the ability may have com about due to some brain damage from an accident.

The only scene I remember is him out in the country connecting the down load device to a telephone line, so he could get what he needed implanted.

I think that he could only retain the implanted information and abilities for a limited amount of time. But I could be mistaken on that.

I can't be sure, Krel, but they did an episode on The Six Million Dollar Man that just may have been what you saw.

"The Ultimate Impostor" from January 2, 1977 was a backdoor pilot for a spin-off show.

On that episode, Dr. Rudy Welles, who created the bionics for Steve Austin, has devised a process which can transfer information & memories from one person to another.

The Complete Gerry Anderson: The Authorized Episode Guide by Chris Bentley.

While the episode production numbers are in the correct order, the episodes themselves were not always broadcast in that order.

Joe McClaine's acquired abilities & experiences from highly skilled professionals via the B.I.G. R.A.T. super computer transference program for each episode.

"The Most Special Agent." Episode number 1, September 29, 1968.

Joe is given the brain patterns of a Russian jet fighter pilot in order to steal a Mig 242 fighter plane during a display at an airbase in Moscow.

Thoughts: This very first episode of Joe 90 that has Joe stealing the Mig 242 really never takes place. It takes place at WIN headquarters where Joe and his father have come for a meeting with operatives Sam Loover and Shane Weston. In order to convince Professor Ian 'Mac' McClaine to allow Joe to be recruited by WIN in order to go on secret espionage missions, WIN chief Shane Weston offers up an imaginary scenario about the theft of the Russian jet.

Nonetheless, the splendid special effects work by the awesome Derek Meddings and his team never fails to impress....even if the mission is only an example of just how valuable Joe will be on real assignments.

The scene where WIN offers nine year old Joe a special gun that fires 200 rounds is rather unnerving.

"Hi-Jacked." Episode number 2, October 20, 1968.

Joe receives the brain pattern of Ed Johnson, one of WIN's (World Intelligence Network) top secret agents, in order to infiltrate the organization of international gun-runner Mario Coletti.

"Spalshdown." Episode number 3, November 24th, 1968.

Joe receives the brain pattern of a US Army Air Force test pilot to locate two missing scientists.

"Operation McClaine." Episode number 4, December 15th, 1968.

Joe adopts the brain pattern of Dr. Emil Kados who is a top brain surgeon in order to perform an operation on Maurice Estoral, one of the world's greatest writers and a Nobel Prize winner.

"Three's A Crowd." Episode number 5, January 19, 1969.

Joe covertly receives the brain pattern of American reporter Angela Davis, who is suspected of really being an enemy agent for a foreign power.

"International Concerto." Episode number 6, November 17, 1968.

Joe receives the brain pattern of renowned concert pianist Igor Sladek who is also a secret agent of WIN.

""Big Fish." Episode 7, December 1st, 1968.

Joe takes on the brain pattern of a top aquanaut to recover a U85 advanced two-man atomic submarine that has sunk in hostile Porto Guavan territorial waters.

"The Unorthodox Shepherd." Episode 8, December 22, 1968.

Joe has the brain pattern of a World Bank Vice-President to discover a gang that can make perfect forgeries.

"Relative Danger." Episode 9, December 8, 1968.

Joe is given the brain pattern of a leading underground explorer in order to rescue three men trapped in the tunnels in the Pueblo Mountains.

""Business Holiday." Episode number 10, December 29, 1968.

Joe intends to adopt the brain pattern of an aquanaut for pleasure while on vacation in order to enjoy diving underwater. However, he is secretly given the brain pattern of a military vehicle expert instead.

"King For A Day." Episode # 11, November 10, 1968.

Joe takes on the brain patterns of the tutor of young Prince Kahib, heir to the throne of Ardaji. Prince Kahib's life is in jeopardy after the Sultan has been murdered, and Kahib is next on the assassination hit list.

"Double Agent." Episode # 12, January 12, 1969.

After three top WIN agents are killed, it appears that there is a double agent in the courier department. Joe is given the brain pattern of department head Harry Sloane in order to undertake a vital mission. However, Sloane is the double agent!

"Most Special Astronaut." Episode # 13, October 6, 1968.

Joe takes on the brain pattern of an astronaut in order to rescue a group of astronauts on a space station who have only three days' air supply left to them.

"Arctic Adventure." Episode # 14, January 5, 1969.

A World Air Force bomber strays of course in a storm and crashes in Eastern Sector enemy territory in the Arctic Circle. Three of the bomber's nuclear devices are recovered but the fourth is missing under the pack ice. Dr. Kelvin is the only man with the knowledge and ability to recover the device but he is too old to participate in the mission, so Joe receives his brain pattern and sets out in a mini-sub to locate the device. He finds it lodged amongst rocks close to the Eastern Alliance Vostula underwater research center, but as he attempts to dislodge it, he is detected by Vostula operatives and base commander Colonel Kovac dispatches a pair of U18 killer submarines with orders to seek and destroy!

Thoughts: The script writers for Joe 90 conceived of a number of intriguing adventure/espionage plots for the series, as well as the identities that Joe must assimilate. The episodes sound as if they're right up the alley of Mission: Impossible. Only Joe has a half-hour to accomplish his dangerous missions.

This episode sounds intriguing, my only quibble for this episode is that it seems unbelievable that in all the world, Dr. Kelvin is the ONLY person who has the knowledge & skills with these nuclear devices. Such technology isn't created by one individual. It involves many people of various ages working for a government. It is foolish that any government would let just one person become so vital to a project that no one can possibly replace them. But it makes for a standard plot device for writers.

"The Fortress." Episode #15, November 3, 1968.

WIN agent Roger Fleming is captures in Santa Marina, South America by Captain Trang and his soldiers. The agent is imprisoned in a virtually unapproachable fortress and interrogated to reveal the whereabouts of top secret microfilm that he managed to hide before he was captured.
Joe receives the brain pattern of Fleming's WIN colleague Mike Laramie. His assignment is to rescue Fleming from the impregnable stronghold.

Thoughts: Nothing like a good caper where the hero has to covertly gain access to some kind of structure deemed to be unassailable. And was there ever any TV spy show, of film, from the 1960's that did not include microfilm?

"Colonel McClaine." Episode #16, October 27, 1968.

Helijets ferrying supplies of highly volatile U114 liquid explosives to the construction site of the new Kuchunga tunnel are being sabotaged en route, so Joe receives the brain patterns of an explosives expert and a top Army driver in order to lead a convoy of three transporter trucks 200 miles overland to the Kuchinga mountains. With the rank of Colonel, Joe takes charge of the convoy, braving sand-storms, river crossings and a heavy rainstorm that causes a landslide, blocking the road into the mountains.

Thoughts: Another exciting story with plenty of suspense, danger, and action. Though I have to ask the question as to why Joe was the only person to be capable of taking on this mission? Aren't there other military experts in the field of explosives that could carry out this hazardous mission?

In this particular case Joe must acquire the skill level of two different experts in order to tackle this assignment. So you can make the case that one individual cannot possess expertise in more than one area. Perhaps Joe 90 writers should have gone this way more often. WIN could always find an experienced professional for a mission without having Joe be the only person who could execute the mission after absorbing someone else's brainwave patterns.
However, if a mission required several, or more, different types of knowledge, then Joe could take on multiple skills if it made sense to send in only one person on a mission.

Once again the incomparable Supervising Visual Effects Director, Derek Meddings and his team, provide marvelous futuristic models and special effects to admire. If you don't care for the puppets, you can relish the special effects.

"Project 90." Episode #17, October 13, 1968.

Dr. Conrad Darota runs an international espionage ring from the cover of his Darota Clinic high in the Swiss Alps. Darota is determined to learn the secrets of the BIG RAT, so he kidnaps Mac and imprisons him in the clinic. Joe has received the brain pattern of a top balloonist is on the way to rescue his father.

Thoughts: Here's an example of where you might make the case that there are plenty of hot-air balloon experts who could perform this rescue. So why does it have to be Joe? Because while the balloonists are experts in balloon flight, they aren't highly skilled WIN agents. Joe could take on the brain patterns of both an agent, as well as a balloonist. Since Joe has to penetrate this enemy installation, we have to assume that this "clinic" is highly protected with state of the art technology and agents. So Joe might also require even more skill levels than even a WIN agent possesses which would force him to have to have more brain patterns placed into him.

The so-called clinic in this episode has no guards of any kind for security. Maybe they felt pretty secure being on the top of a mountain with a cable car as the only access to the clinic.

"The Race." Episode #18, February 2, 1969.

Joe receives Mac's brain pattern in an experiment to see if the BIG RAT also transfers the pattern of the subconscious.

Thoughts: Intriguing experiment. After Joe takes on Mac's brain pattern, he goes to sleep and dreams about adopting the brain pattern of a Monte Carlo rally driver. So this episode is really not an actual adventure taking place in the real world.

"The Professional." Episode #19, January 26, 1969.

The new military dictatorship of a middle-European country refuses to return a $10 million grant for a hospital building program. Instead, General Heppel is securing the gold in a castle that is guarded by Spider riot control vehicles.
Joe takes on the pattern of a professional safe-cracker in order to penetrate the daunting castle and recover the gold.

Thoughts: The more I read about these exciting missions that are dreamed up for Joe to tackle, the more I wonder if the Mission: Impossible TV series influenced the writers at all for Joe 90? Joe first premiered in the UK on September 29th, 1968. M:I (1966~1973) would have been starting its third season at that time. So it's possible.

"Lone-Handed 90." Episode #20, March 9, 1969.

A breakdown has put the BIG RAT out of service. Joe falls asleep in front of the television and dreams that he is a cowboy back in the days of the wild west.

Thoughts: Another episode where the focus is on Joe dreaming and not participating in a real adventure. I suppose this gave the artistic team something fresh to create, the 19th century American frontier, but I prefer seeing actual Joe 90 missions taking place.

I agree, Mike. Very Happy

Back when I was teaching writing lessons to my elementary school kids, there were several important tips I focused on.

One was that they shouldn't begin every sentence with "then" as a way of establishing a chain of events.

"Attack of the Tiger." Episode #21, March 16, 1969.

WIN discovers that the Eastern Alliance has completed work on a secret rocket base hidden inside a cliff face which will be used to put a nuclear device into Earth orbit in 10 days' time, holding the world to ransom. Joe adopts the brain patterns of an Eastern Alliance defense expert and a top World Air Force pilot to fly the VG 104, the WAF's fastest, most heavily armed fighter bomber, on a dangerous mission to destroy the base.

Thoughts: Joe receiving the brain patterns of two individuals with their respective skills and experience always makes more sense. I've written before that it seems illogical that WIN would send Joe 90 on any mission with just the abilities transferred to him of one professional. My contention being that WIN would be able to locate one adult with those same talents, and then send them on an assignment.
However, having a case that required one person with multiple skills in diverse areas would be much harder, if not impossible, to fill. Here is where only Joe 90 could successfully adapt to the crisis at hand by being versed in numerous ways that most individuals are not.

"Talkdown." Episode #22, February 9, 1969.

After the crash of the experimental F116 hypersonic fighter jet, a second prototype is to be flown by Joe 90.

Thoughts: Joe 90 certainly had to do quite a bit of flying for the series. Even in a balloon.

"Breakout" Episode#23, February 16, 1969.

Two escaped convicts manage to seize a cannon. They use it to destroy two sections of a railway bridge which traps a monotrain in the middle section. On board is the Canadian Prime Minister. The convicts demand a helijet for their escape, and a million dollars for the life of the Prime Minister.
Joe acts as the ransom courier with only the brain pattern of an Olympic bob sleigh champion for the dangerous assignment.

Thoughts: Interesting putting Joe 90 in a position of having the brain patterns of someone whose skills don't appear to be useful on this particular assignment.

I'm also in awe that two escaping convicts can possibly manage to orchestrate such a complex caper. Seems to me you'd need a big team of experts to pull this off.

"Mission x-41" Episode #24, March 30, 1969.

The Eastern Alliance has succeeded in isolating X-41, a virus that breaks down the molecular structure of everything it touches. WIN scientist Professor Baxter is searching for an antibody when he is infected by the virus and collapses.

So, the only hope of obtaining the antibody is to steal the formula from Dr. Chan's laboratory at an Eastern Alliance base. Joe is given the brain patterns of Professor Baxter and a top WIN agent and then dropped near the base.

Thoughts: Another riveting and dangerous espionage plot for Joe 90. It'd be intriguing to revive Joe 90 for a live action SF television series. Probably not wise to have the exact same premise of Joe being a nine-year old being thrown into all types of jeopardy. However, they could simply have Joe 90 be an adult this time around who willingly absorbs the brain patterns of various individuals.

"Test Flight" Episode #25, April 6th, 1969.

During the test flight of the new Orbital Glide Transport plane, a fault develops in the motors and the plane crashes onto the Launch Control building, trapping the flight controller Dr. Slade inside along with a concealed monitoring computer that will reveal whether the fault was due to a design flaw or sabotage.

The rescue drill can only cut a bore hole that is not wide enough for a man, but Joe can fit through, so he receives the brain pattern of project controller Johnson and descends into the Launch Control building to rescue Slade and recover the computer.

However, once inside, he discovers that it is Slade himself who has sabotaged the project. . .

Thoughts: Again I salute the scriptwriters with conjuring up clever and imaginative plots for Joe 90.
