We haven't heard from David in over a week, and I'm concerned that my enthusiastic reply to his comments above might have offended him! Sad

If that's the case, I deeply regret it. I only wanted to counter his observations about The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's a spirited and interesting debate, and I enjoyed the exchange of ideas.

But if I said anything at all which was offensive, I am truly sorry. Krel is one of this boards most intelligent and imaginative members, and I'd never knowingly discourage him from making his valuable contributions to All Sci-Fi.

Bud, you didn't offend me at all. I've just been trying to think of something new I could add to the discussion.

So far, I've come up snake-eyes. But I'm gonna keep trying.

David.

I've always taken a spirited debate with Bud with tongue firmly planted in cheek. It's a bit like SNL's "Jane, You ignorant bitch!!" kind of thing.

We're all friends and differing points of view are GREATLY desired because they initiate new and viable thoughts leading to greater insights and points of view.

Even during the great "FORBIDDEN PLANET MORBIUS HOUSE" DEBATE the mood was electric and exciting! (If you don't know what I mean … Look it up in the FP thread!!

Bring it on Bud!!!... I don't want to argue with an unknowleged fool! (Although in your case I'll make an exception! LOL, LOL !) (only kidding buddy!)

Guys, you both have made my day! Very Happy

I was genuinely concerned that I'd gotten so caught up in "presenting my case" to my esteemed colleague, David, that I had crossed a line and acted like a damn know-it-all! Shocked

David, I think Gord worked a miracle when he suggested that the Gort police started out as an effective tool which the sentient races used to help them keep the peace — and then, over the years, they evolved into the soulless mechanical dictators you described because (as Gord suggested) their programming was corrupted!

So, we're BOTH right — and I like that idea much more than my original concept, which put all the blame on the aliens who designed the robots to be the way they are now. Gord's suggestion explains why Gort tended to "shoot first and ask question later."

So, between the three of us we've built the foundation for a perfect remake-or-sequel to The Day the Earth Stood Still. I the idea works either way! Very Happy

Publicity photo of Helen Benson and Klaatu.

I've always been bothered by that picture because the color is poor and it's so obvious that it's been titled to make if look like Klaatu is gazing down at Helen like Rhett and Scarlett in the Gone with the Wind posters!

So, I decided to fix the silly thing!

There . . . that's better. Klaatu's not laying on top of Helen. Much more dignified! Very Happy

That's a beauty, yes indeed Cool

I'll confess, however, that I'm still shamelessly prone to prefer my own altered version of Fred Barton's version of Gort. Wink

Here's a new idea for a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Klaatu comes to Earth with a duel purpose; to deliver the warning about the robot police, and to save mankind from a global pandemic.

Thinking Outside the "Plot"!

~ A Question for the Members: After Klaatu makes mankind aware of the fact that we live in a galaxy populated by many other races of intelligent beings with advanced technology, would the nations of the world put aside their vastly different ideologies, cultures, and religions to band together and achieve world peace?

~ My Theory: In a pigs eye they would! Rolling Eyes

They'd stubbornly cling to their superstitions, their ancient cultures, and their selfish national pride — thus dooming the race to perpetual isolationism and stagnate efforts to advance our own technology. Sad

(I just tossed this out to encourage a discussion. I hope I get one.) Confused

I am compelled, sadly, to agree with you, Bud.

We just are too primitive a species to put aside our cultural differences, fear of one another, egos, corruption and cynicism.

These traits along with our power politics and lust for power will prevent us from ever listening to Klaatu and all the wonderful things these other worlds could offer us.

Well, now I'm depressed. And after all the good news recently on television.

________________________________

On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 2020, I enjoyed several of my favorite Yuletide movies — especially White Christmas.

After doing so I wondered if there were any "Christmas connections" in our beloved sci-fi movies from the 1950s.

I quickly realized that Conquest of Space (<— link) included the very emotional "Christmas miracle" of the snowfall on Mars which saved the crew when they were running out of water.

Then I realized that The Day the Earth Stood Still is famous for its alleged religious connections. Both fans and reviewers have pointed out that the name on the tag of the suit Klaatu stole is "Carpenter" — a possible reference to Jesus, the son of a Joseph, who was a carpenter.

Add to this the fact that Klaatu died and then was raised from dead, which is similar to Christ's resurrentionl

Furthermore, after returning to life, both Jesus and Klaatu ascend to the heavens! Shocked

Frankly, I've never bought the idea that these religious connections were deliberate, but they sure are enjoyable to contemplate. Very Happy

One reviewer pointed out why didn't the military issue a drawing of Klaatu once he escaped from the hospital? This would have been able to have citizens on the alert for him.

He was at the hospital long enough to have a sketch artist do a complete job on his face. That sketch could have been sent to newspapers, television, and posted around the city.

The reviewer also found it unbelievable that only 2 guards were posted at the ballpark where Klaatu's space ship & Gort were located. One of the most significant historical events to happen to our planet, and we think 2 soldiers as watchmen is a sound idea!?!
