Sometimes the pilot for a television series is produced as an episode on a weekly established TV show.

We all know that the second season ST:TOS episode "Assignment: Earth" served as a pilot for a spin~off weekly show of its own.

"Cavender is Coming" was a 1962 episode of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone that served as a potential spin~off.

The Outer Limits season one episode #32 from May 4, 1964 "The Forms of Things Unknown" was the pilot for an anthology show that would have delved into the supernatural and fantasy.

Wonder Woman presented an April 5, 1978 called "The Girl From Ilandia" about a beautiful young girl from another dimension who possesses strange powers. Yep, a pilot for a teenage hero.

The Six Million Dollar Man spun-off The Bionic Woman. This was tried again but with "The Bionic Boy" as the spin~off which was not picked up.

What struck me odd was that in all four of producer Irwin Allen's sci~fi TV shows is that he never once used any of his weekly series episodes as a pilot for a spin~off show.

Now Allen was known as tightfisted with his weekly series; that's why we saw so many of the same props, sets, and make-up pop up on different shows of his.

So I'm kinda surprised that he never got around to having any of his established TV shows episodes serve as a pilot for a spin~off series of its own. It would have saved on the budget for him.

Perhaps his regular shows were not the proper format for introducing a different sci-fi concept.

I just figured that a producer who was quick to recycle items from one of his sci~fi shows into another of his sci~fi series would have taken the advantage of utilizing his four TV series to introduce a potential spin~off show.

That's more of a studio thing, which still goes on today. Movie studios will reuse ANYTHING they have in their inventory. We just notice the futuristic props and set pieces because they are more noticeable.

Those same Fox props and set pieces appeared in more TV shows and movies that were filmed on the Fox lot. "Our Man Flint" used every fantastic set piece and set in the Fox in the Fox inventory.

"Star Trek" did the same thing, reusing props and sets. It's a matter of money. The studios paid for those things, and by God they were going to get their money's worth out of them! Laughing

I believe that "The Outer Limits" episode "The Invisibles" was also a backdoor pilot.

David.

The George Reeves SUPERMAN had two proposed spinoffs although neither were aired.

SUPERBOY and SUPERPUP were both actually filed as pilots and are available on YouTube. SUPERBOY was actually a fairly decent production while SUPERPUP was a "puppet" version with Bark Kent as the Pup of Steel!
