'Star Wars' awakens new cosplay
Carly Mallenbaum, USA TODAY

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been in theaters less than a month, but costumer Dawn Bright already has homemade outfits inspired by the film. Among her Force Awakens creations: a Kylo Ren costume based on actor Adam Driver's edgy baddie that she wore to the premiere (through her costuming group, she was invited to the Los Angeles event and after-party, where she was seated next to Driver), screenings and charity functions. .....

Do we REALLY want to see Episodes VII and IX? Or even potential Episodes X,XI and XII [Lucas' original intent]? More stories about this incredibly disfunctional family?

Gee, I don't know, Butch. Hasn't the new film proved that if you take long enough to make these things, the former group of fans die of old age and their children get hooked just like the last generation?

And the new film also proved that if you don't stray from the established pattern, the majority of the fans don't mind seeing it all over again!

The guy who does the ColdCrashPictures videos (whose name seems to be Serge Bodnarchuk — I kid you not) has perfectly defined my own somewhat negative feelings about Star Wars: The Force Rehashes A New Hope in this enjoyable video.

Behold . . .

Fast & Dirty "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Review

And just to put things into perspective, Serge explains why the seven Star Wars can't really be ranked based on their relative merits, because each one has it's own saving grace that prevents it from being fairly placed at the bottom of the list.

Star Wars Superlatives, Or: Why I Can't Rank the Star Wars Films

Well, the dinner menu tonight is succulent roasted crow. I'm looking forward to eating it.

Really.

(Okay, not really. But fair is fair.)

I watched this movie again tonight and realized that:

(a) I hadn't understood several important concepts that were very important to the story,

(b) my two trips to the restroom at the theater during the movie had occurred at unfortunate moments, and they caused me to miss important plot elements,

— and finally —

(c) when you get so old you have to make two trips to the restroom during a movie, it's time to just wait until these things come out on Blue-ray and then watch them at home (with the remote next to you on the couch and the bathroom right down the hall).

So, today I realized that the movie really wasn't as bad as I had initially thought. For example, I was mistaken when I objected to the way Rey jumped into the Millennium Falcon and flew it with no prior experience — and the way she did the Jedi mind trick on a stormtrooper, despite having no Jedi training — and the fact that she won her first-ever light saber duel . . . against the head badass.

And she even pulled some Jedi mind tricks on Kylo Ren!

What I'd thought was just blatant rule-breaking for the hell of it turned out to be foreshadowing. Rey is destined to become something very special . . . more so than Luke, and even more so than Anakin.

Sorry, guys. I just missed that important point.

My other objection was to the idea that a stormtrooper could suddenly realize that shooting people was not a nice thing to do, and decide he didn't want to play soldier anymore.

But the important thing I'd missed was that Finn wasn't a clone, just a regular guy who'd been conscripted into service at an early age, and the battle he ran away from was first combat experience. So, his actions weren't as illogical, story-wise, as I'd thought.

Oops. No wonder I thought this movie sucked. Shocked

Anyway, now that I have a better understanding of why this movie was so popular, I'd like to ask everybody to just forget all that bad stuff I said about it in the earlier posts.

Let's all do that on the count of three. 1 — 2 — 3!

There. All gone.

Now . . . what was I just talking about?
Confused

Hmmm. It's an interesting idea, the possibility that Kylo Ren is totally committed to, in effect, pretending to be a Sith Lord so he can kill Snoke and save the galaxy.

It is sort of appealing to think that Kylo is so committed to saving the galaxy that he's willing to do horrible things to achieve that end.

As opposed to the idea that he's just a sniveling little ingrate with delusions of grandeur, and who throws temper tiantrums when he gets pissed off.

After all, we've seen many a fine story in which a character seemed like a good guy at first, then turned into a bad guy for a big chunk of the story, and finally revealed himself to be a good guy with a long-range plan that required sacrifice, subterfuge, and deception.

One of the things about The Force Awakens which I did not like at first was the way the story seemed to repeat the whole "Anakin was good but he turned bad" idea.

This new theory is different. Kylo is SO good he's willing be real bad in the eyes of absolutely everybody for the sake of bringing about the ultimate defeat of the evil forces in the galaxy.

Admittedly I'm not sure what to make the whole "teaming up with Rey" aspect of the theory, as stated here:

Quote:
Which is also why Kylo Ren seems to be interested in Rey. If they team up, they???ll literally be the light side and the dark side of the Force.

If Kylo Ren is really committed to being a Sith Lord in every respect except for his secret goal to bring down the Sith, I'm not sure how he and Rey will "team up".

But perhaps the writers involved are strong enough with the Force to pull it off! We shall see . . .

Always felt that Star Wars lost its mojo with episodes 1, 2, & 3. For me the Lucas lightning-in-a-bottle magic just wasn't there anymore. Stale dialogue, cliche characters, weak story.

Here's hoping the magic will be back with the force this time.

The question of whether or not the movies which followed episodes 4, 5, and 6 were as good as those first three films is impossible to answer.

First of all, those of us who were young and gay in 1977 are incapable of reacting to movies with the same youthful enthusiasm we did 44 years ago. Our culture changes with time — and so do the people in it. That's why young and gay used to mean "young and carefree".

Now it means something very different. Rolling Eyes

I don't know for sure, but I suspect that young audiences today consider the more recent films to be interesting and exciting to watch — whereas they see the original movies as fine examples of . . . the kind of old movies their parents liked.

And so, Pow, I guess what I'd have to say in reply to your suggestion that "Star Wars lost its mojo with episodes 1, 2, & 3" is simply that each generation's mojo is shaped by the prevailing culture.

For example, the image below is from an an article called The best high-tech car for 2021.

Okay, sure, it's engineering is high-tech. But frankly my emotional reaction is . . . . (yawn) zzzzzzzz .

Back in 1957 — when was I was young and carefreethis was considered to be a car with real mojo, Baby! Cool
