U.S. military forces “don’t know how to defend” against China and Russia’s most advanced missile systems, a senior U.S. diplomat has acknowledged.

This comes after a shocking report that China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile earlier this year. The Chinese government has disputed the report, claiming they were testing a spacecraft instead.

“Hypersonic technology is something that we have been concerned about,” said Ambassador Robert Wood, who represents the United States at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. “We just don't know how we can defend against that technology, neither does China, neither does Russia.”

That admission followed a report that China tested a hypersonic missile in August that orbited the globe but missed its target by more than 20 miles. Chinese officials deny conducting a weapons test, but Wood cited the development as a catalyst for a hypersonic arms buildup.

“We have seen China and Russia pursuing very actively the use, the militarization of this technology, so we are just having to respond in kind," he said.

China maintains that the reported missile test was in fact “a spacecraft” designed to make round trips.

“This was a routine test of spacecraft to verify technology of spacecraft's reusability. It is of great significance to reducing the cost of using spacecraft and providing a convenient and cheap way for mankind's two-way transportation in the peaceful use of space,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters Monday. "Several companies around the world have conducted similar tests.”

Intercontinental ballistic missiles “share many similar technologies and processes inherent in a space launch program,” an overlap that U.S. officials and analysts have underscored in the context of Iran’s development of technology that could deliver a nuclear warhead.

"We have made clear our concerns about the military capabilities China continues to pursue, capabilities that only increase tensions in the region and beyond,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in response to the reported test.

While the report suggests that China has developed missiles that can avoid U.S. missile defense systems, some analysts have argued that the latest innovation adds little to China’s ability to strike the U.S.

China already has ~100 nuclear-armed ICBMs that can strike the U.S.,” Middlebury Institute’s Jeffrey Lewis wrote on Twitter. "A new system to evade our defenses is only threatening if we were planning all along to destroy/intercept China’s ICBMs in a crisis. Which we definitely weren’t.”

Wood, the arms control diplomat, implied that U.S. officials had tried to avoid spurring a scramble for hypersonic missiles.

“We had held back from pursuing military applications for this technology,” he said.

DO WE HAVE A "NEW" ARMS RACE???????
Does rhis give a fully recognized reality to the "SPACE FORCE" as a neccesity????

If we don't do something about it . . . The Moon is RED!!

And soon we will be too!!!!

Wow . . . Shocked

Gord, you and I are old enough to remember the old phrase, "Better dead than Red!"

If China keeps developing the weapons your post describes, it might mean the Chinese would be just a happy if we were either one of those. Dead OR Red! Sad

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said that the United States would win the Cold War against the U.S.S.R. by simply outspending them. And that we did.

Of course the tragic drawback here is that if we feed the ravenous military the enormous amount of money it desires, there remains little or no money for anything else in our country.

We have since learned that the threat of Russia and how many weapons they possessed were greatly overstated by our government in order to continue to get approval for a vast, bloated military budget. The Military Industrial Complex was in full play before President Eisenhower warned us about it.

Imagine that, people in power lying through their teeth to get what they want!?!

Let's see, we've just ended a 20-year, 3 trillion dollar war in Afghanistan. The Pentagon has been burning the midnight oil in order to identify America's next deadly enemy. This will create fear and push through an increase in the military budget. A military budget that is the largest of any nation, larger than China, larger than the next 23 democracies who are allies.

You can see that history is being played out exactly as it did back in the 1950s, and sadly, that Americans are being played once more. Different stagecoach, same driver.

Continually we are told by Washington that we do not have the money we really require for the Infrastructure Bill, universal health care, global warming, etc.

It's the same old story: $$$ for wars will always be immediately & abundantly available, no questions asked. Lots of $$$.

And these continuing useless, bs wars will cost us the lives of honorable men & women that will be sent into harms way for the profit of the arms dealers (US is the biggest one by the way), private contractors (Go Dick Chaney), banks.

Politicians egos come into play here also. Who can possibly stand up against America? We can nation build the world into peace...or at least in a way to get what we want out of it.
We are the leader of the free world they tell us repeatedly.

Really? Then how come we have a dark history of using our power and might to interfere with other countries and installing brutal dictators in power because they'll play ball with us. The men and women that wanted democracy for their nation won't be as compliant, so they must be undermined by noble America. Al Capone America.

Are China, Russia, and N.Korea to be watched closely? You bet! And Washington must be watched even closer. They can be an enemy to the public just as deadly.

History proves over and over again that great nations fall from within and rarely---if ever---to a foreign enemy.

Wow . . .

A few years ago I wouldn't have believed all those dire statements you made, Mike.

But after witnessing the current corruption in Washington and the abysmal stupidity of the American people who continue to believe the lies of the moron they elected as president, everything you said now seems possible.

America is no longer the nation I grew up believing in. Sad
