What you dismiss as "plywood sets, plastic props and shower curtain costumes" were all part of a deliberate kind of visual stylization called Minimalism -- influenced by budgetary constraints, certainly, but ultimately integral to the show as a whole.

The problem with "visions of the future" is that, given enough time, they always look dated. Fritz Lang's Metropolis looks like a 1920s version of the future. Forbidden Planet looks like a 1950s version of the future. Star Trek TOS looks like a 1960s version of the future. And Star Trek: The Next Generation couldn't look more '80s if the characters were wearing spandex and shoulder pads and playing keytars!
(Come to think of it, they did wear spandex and shoulder pads.) |
