Would You Believe — ?

from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedy_Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr's earliest inventions include an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a carbonated beverage. The beverage was less than successful; Lamarr herself claimed it tasted like Alka-Seltzer.

Lamarr's reputation as an inventor is based on her co-creation of a frequency-hopping system with George Antheil, an avant garde composer and neighbor of Lamarr in California.

Lamarr's and Antheil's frequency-hopping idea served as a basis for modern spread-spectrum communication technology, such as Bluetooth, COFDM (used in Wi-Fi network connections), and CDMA (used in some cordless and wireless telephones).

Lamarr and Antheil were inducted into the Inventor's Hall of Fame in 2014.

I did a drawing of Hedy which I made from this photo, and it's charred around the edges because it tends to spontaneously combust! Shocked

Despite what the movie Blazing Saddles says, I don't think we'll ever confuse Hedy Larmarr with Hedley Lamarr!

I have read that she came up with a device or a principle that made U.S. torpedoes more accurate.

I wonder if the drink was "Fizzies"? Back in the 1960s, Fizzies were flavored tablets that 'fizzed' when you put them in a glass of water. I don't remember what the drink tasted like, but then it has been around 50 years since I drank any.

Yes, Fizzies — was what they 'evolved' into. Most tasted like grape soda.

These should have been the drink that NASA made famous, not the awful Tang!

A few weeks in space and a guy sure gets tired of a drink that always taste the same.

But with Fizzies -- variety is the space of life! I mean . . . spice. Embarassed

I'm not really sure that a carbonated beverage is what you need while sealed in a small space capsule or spacesuit. I am reminded of an MRE I once saw. The package was labeled: WARNING! Bean content. Not for flight, or pre-flight use! Laughing

I don't remember adding sugar to the Fizzies, but then my Mom might have added it before I dropped in the tablets.

Fizzies were what sprang to mind as I read the description. The ones I tried didn't require the addition of sugar. And yes, they tasted like flavored Alka-Seltzer.

I got that jpeg from a website called Memory Glands, which has this to say about Frizzies.
___________________________________________

Lem Billings, a friend of President John F. Kennedy, invented the idea for Emerson Drug Company, manufacturer of Bromo-Seltzer, by adding a fruit flavor that children liked. Once perfected, Emerson named the creation Fizzies.

The tablet was dropped into a glass of water, then fizzed and dissolved, creating a sweet, effervescent drink. Fizzies were first introduced by Emerson on a regional basis in July 1957. In 1962, the Emerson Drug Company was acquired by Warner Lambert Company, which sold the product nationally that same year.

In the 1950s and 1960s Fizzies came in seven flavors: grape, orange, cherry, lemon-lime, strawberry, root beer, and cola. Fizzies' sales grew both nationally and internationally until 1968, achieving more than double the sales volume of Kool-Aid.

"Frizzies" is what happens to women's hair from overstyling.
