Check out the discussion on Battlestar Galactic (2004), a series I didn't really give a fair chance and need to watch again.

Then take a look at the disturbing discussion about The Fly, which ponders the fate of poor David Hedison.

And finally, give this interesting question some thought: Which sci-fi movies present a positive future the best? Bare in mind that these days most folks don't believe there will BE a positive future. Confused[

Which sci-fi movies present a positive future the best?

Which science fiction movies do you think have presented a bright future for mankind most effectively? I'm looking for movies that present an optimistic future, not a depressing apocalyptic vision.

A few movies which could be included could present a version of the future that isn't totally optimistic, like Beyond the Time Barrier, which offers hope for the human race in it's final scene.

I'll kick things off with my two personal favorites.

Forbidden Planet (1956)

Avatar (2009)

Battlestar Galactica (2004 series)

I was never a fan of this series, but it certainly deserves a thread on All Sci-Fi. But I can't make original comments about the series because I only watched the pilot when it first aired.

So. here's what IMDB has to say about it, just to kick of the discussion.

The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth.

However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation.

In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage — even as their former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought — the fleet also faces internal political conflict

The rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen.

In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed.

The Fly (1958)

Nowadays we know spiders don't swallow insects or deluded scientists who accidentally get mixed up with flies, but suck them dry after biting them and injected an enzyme which turns all of their bodily organs into a soup.

After taking a look at the clip below, it occurred to me that the spider could actually be doing that very thing — injecting David Hedison with the enzyme to tenderize his innards! Shocked

We only see the spider descend on David for a instant, then he gets "rocked" by Herbert Marshall.

When you think about, David's fate is even more horrible that way than if the spider bit off his head and killed him quickly. Being trapped beneath the monstrous spider while it sank it's fangs into his chest and pumped a load of Adolf's Man Tenderizer into him would be a slower death . . . and probably just as painful!

Yes, sir — that scene is a masterpiece of effective Horror. Sad
