I read the Wikipedia summary of the video game, and the premise is hellishly complex. Naturally the story for the game spans several editions, so summarizing it is like trying to describe The Matrix 1, 2, and 3 in a few paragraphs.

Obviously, the film will engineer its version of the story to make it work for a two-hour movie being watched by folks who aren't familiar with the game.

Hopefully . . . Confused

A really, really simple version of the premise goes like this.

On an Earth-like planet called Sera, the population enjoys a long period of peace and prosperity after nearly destroying themselves with numerous wars. But they're having trouble conjuring up enough energy to run their advanced technology — until they discover a glowing goo under the ground called "Imulsion" (not a very imaginative name, which I assume is pronounced the same as "emulsion"). The glowing goo somehow produces more energy than a army of Energizer bunnies.

Naturally the peaceful civilization fragments into greedy factions who start warring again for control of the Imulsion. And then things get even worse.

A species of sentient creatures called the Locust (another less-than-brilliant name) emerges from underground and wipes out most of the foolish folks who have suddenly refused to play nice together after giving up their previous self-destructive ways and creating an advanced civilization.

Trust me, this is the short version of the premise. The movie certainly has it's work cut out if it hopes to turn the game into something that can be enjoyed by fans of the game and folks who've never even hear of it.
