The main attraction here is the elaborate and outrageous monster suit constructed by Paul Blaisdell.
The plot of the movie is equally outrageous. The Great Lombardi (Chester Morris) hypnotizes Mara English and (somehow) conjures up her former incarnation as a weird sea monster. Miss English remains human and comatose during the creature's appearance (which means no transformation scenes were required). The sea creature emerges from the ocean and obeys the murderous commands of Lombardi.
When Lombardi is accused of fakery by psychic investigator Lance Fuller ("This Island Earth"), Lombardi publicly predicts a few murders and then privately sends his monster out to commit them. A wealthy sharp-eyed promoter (Tom Conway) manages to exploit Lombardi's growing fame, but when he goes too far Lombardi decides to eliminate Conway with the monster.
The police finally get wise to the connection between Lombardi and the "predicted" murders, and when they close in on him he summons his monster. The creature battles the police, but it rebels against its master when he orders it to harm Conway, with whom Mara English has fallen in love.
All this sounds a little better than it actually plays out on screen. Directed by Edward L. Cahn, who remade the whole thing one year later as "Voodoo Woman" with the same cast! _________________ ____________

It was remade yet again in 1967 as Creature of Destruction, a made-for-TV film produced and directed by schlockmeister Larry Buchanan. |

Well, Scot, that's perfectly understandable.
When one lacks talent, one can simply keep making the same crap over and over again — while desperately hoping the public are so witless they won't notice they're paying to see remakes of movies that shouldn't have been made in the first place!
This, of course, is exactly how disreputable politicians get re-elected year after year! _________________ ____________

Larry Buchanan wrote, produced and directed eight films for American International Pictures. Some of them were remakes of AIP's earlier black-and-white sci-fi/horror movies.
The Eye Creatures (aka Attack of the Eye Creatures) -- remake of Invasion of the Saucer Men
Zontar, the Thing from Venus -- remake of It Conquered the World
Creature of Destruction -- remake of The She Creature
In the Year 2889 -- remake of Day the World Ended
Made under Buchanan's Azalea Pictures banner (and filmed entirely in Texas), these ultra-low-budget quickies were shot on 16mm stock and released directly to television.
Interesting sidenote: Larry Buchanan learned the craft of film directing in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Frankly, I've seen military training and propaganda films that are better-directed than the stuff Buchanan made! |

Based on your comment, it would seem that Buchanan did NOT “learn his craft of film directing” in the Army — he just directed really BAD “military training and propaganda films”. _________________ ____________
