Back in the 70s, there was a company that would convert cargo barges into homes. They would landscape the deck to resemble an island, and build a two-story house in the hold. Barge holds are HUGE, so it would be a large house.

With the technology we have today, a barge home could be made totally self-sufficient with water and power.
