Interesting man, Butch. The article talks about his dedication to the genre and his willingness to share his work at conventions, but it states quite frankly that his paintings "were not very good astronomical paintings, but they were colorful and fun and reflected a genuine passion for the universe."

I'm afraid I have to agree about the paintings, but his dioramas are gorgeous.
Very Happy

The dioramas look like they could be for Virgin Galactic.

I hadn't seen these photos in years, they are beautiful. I wonder how many photos he did for "Dream of the Stars"? I would love to see the all, including any behind-the-scenes photos, if he did them.

Ron Miller's site has some more B&W photos on his site: http://black-cat-studios.com/dollens.html

The article was inconclusive - were they ever really for a film, or just him wishing it were a film? Regardless, high quality work!

It's strange how few covers Morris Scott Dollens did for science fiction magazines. He did a few for minor titles like Spaceway, but this is the only Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction cover he did, according to the isfdb site - the November 1957 issue.

But then, F&SF did have access to Chesley Bonestell!

I got the impression from the article, that he was using the photos to try and generate interest in a movie.

The article said that he wasn't that good of an artist. Maybe not, but there is no denying, that he was a first-class model maker, and photographer.

As I recall he also did a few covers on G B Love's fanzine Rocket's Blast / ComicCollector.
