During WWII, the United States Army Air Corps B-24D Liberator bomber the "Lady Be Good" disappeared without a trace on it's first combat mission from it's base in Libya. On Nov. 9, 1958, a British Petroleum oil exploration team discovered the wreckage. A search discovered the remains of all but one of crew in 1960. They had bailed out of the bomber believing that they were over water, and died trying to walk out of the desert.
Rod Serling found the story fascinating, and used it as the inspiration for the 1960 "Twilight Zone" episode "King Nine Shall Not Return", staring Bob Cummigs in what is mostly a one man show.
In 1970, the story was revived as a ghost story in the CBS TV movie "Sole Survior". I have not seen the movie since it was first broadcast in 1970. So please excuse the summery from IMDB with some additions from me. The summery is brief to avoid spoilers.
When a B-25 Mitchell bomber "Home Run", believed to have crashed in the ocean during WWII is found in the Libyan desert, a Colonel and Major (William Shatner & Vince Edwards) accompany the only surviving member of the crew, who is now a General (Richard Basehart) to figure out what happened. The General claims that he and the other members of the crew jumped over the ocean when in reality he bailed out leaving the others to fend for themselves. And while the Colonel just wants the whole thing closed, the Major insists on finding the truth. And watching them are the ghosts of the crew, waiting to see if they will finally get to go home.
