Doctor Who vet Russell T. Davies returns as showrunner 12 years after his departure

In major news for Who-vians, Russell T. Davies, the producer who spearheaded the revival of Doctor Who in 2005, will return as showrunner of the beloved sci-fi series starting in 2023.

The comeback coincides with Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, but BBC confirms Davies will stick around for seasons "beyond" 2023.

"I'm beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we're time-travelling too fast, there's a whole series of Jodie Whittaker's brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm — I'm still a viewer for now," Davies said in a statement.

Davies came on to Doctor Who after the show's 16-year hiatus and relaunched the title first with Christopher Eccleston as the titular time-hopping hero, and later with David Tennant in the titular role. He left the show in 2009.
Chibnall, who showruns the current Doctor Who, starring Whittaker as the Doc, called Davies' comeback "monumentally exciting." Whittaker, too, will be departing the show after her three-season tenure.

"Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him — Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let's be honest everyone in the whole world, have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead," Chibnall said.

"As the 13th Doctor prepares to embark on new and extraordinary adventures, the winds of change are blowing… bringing with them news to delight Doctor Who fans across the globe," said, BBC director of drama Piers Wenger.

"We are thrilled that Russell is returning to Doctor Who to build on the huge achievements of Chris and Jodie. Thank you to the two of them and the team in Cardiff for all they continue to do for the show and hello Russell, it's wonderful to have you back."

I didn't care for a lot of what RTD did with the show when it returned. The first episode "Rose" was terrible and I can see why the Sci-Fi Channel passed on airing it after viewing it and "The End of the World", both are cheap-looking and very uneven in tone.

For me, RTD is a mostly lazy writer who has occasional touches of brilliance, but not enough to want him back.

Though it doesn't really matter to me anymore; after 30+ years of being a devoted fan I wrote the show off when they changed the Doctor to a woman.

Strong, preexisting characters like the Rani, and Romana, could have been brought back; there was no need to re-sex the Doctor for "the little girls to look up to".

I don't see it getting any better going forward.

Last week, David Tennant’s 14th Doctor debuted in a special scene recorded for the charity telethon Children in Need—one that took the Doctor back to the very genesis of the Daleks. But it also made a big change to their creator, one that returning showrunner Russell T. Davies intends to keep.

In the brief scene—depicting the early days of Kaled scientists developing the travel casing that would eventually transform them into Daleks—fans saw Julian Bleach reprise his role as Davros, the Daleks’ creator. But Davros was very different to how we’ve largely seen him: no longer scarred, and no longer in a Dalek-esque wheelchair aid. This wasn’t just an early version of the villain; according to Davies, the intent behind that is to keep Davros as such going forward—to push against back the trope of largely associating physical disabilities with villainous characters.

“We had long conversations about bringing Davros back, because he’s a fantastic character,” Davies said as part of an interview broadcast in Doctor Who Unleashed, which accompanied the release of the short scene on the BBC iPlayer. “Time and society and culture and taste has moved on. And there’s a problem with the Davros of old in that he’s a wheelchair user, who is evil. And I had problems with that. And a lot of us on the production team had problems with that, of associating disability with evil. And trust me, there’s a very long tradition of this [in media].”
