"Dax"

Not bad, not great. Treading water.

Kind of an opportunity lost to delve into the whole Dax past.

I know what you mean.

I think we actually see a Trill (the big worm inside Terry Ferrell) at least once in the series, but they don't give it any dialog, so it's a bit hard to accept it as anything more than a long, slimy prop. Sad

It also occurs to me that having the "host" be a lovely lady might have been a mistake. Miss Ferrell was just too darn good at being exactly what she was, a lovely lady with plenty of charm and beauty — who allegedly had a yucky-looking worm thingy inside her. Rolling Eyes

Perhaps a rough looking man who was prone to be moody would have been better — an actor who could convince us he was more than a normal human. They could explain his somber nature as being a human reaction to some of the Trill's memories of bad situations it had experienced during its long life.

After writing the paragraph above I read portions of the Wikipedia article on this subject, and I found this.

When the show began, the writers had difficulty defining the character of Dax. Michael Piller explained, "Having a Trill seemed like a really, really good idea at the time, but it was the most difficult character for us to define. Jadzia Dax escaped us.

At first we thought she was going to be ethereal, a Grace Kelly/Audrey Hepburn kind of goddess, but ultimately I think Ira Behr really figured it out, probably not until the second season, when he really made her a smart-talking, wise-cracking tough cookie."

I think they were on the right track originally. But they were still trying to make it work with an attractive woman, and that (in my opinion) was a mistake.

However, I haven't watched DS9 very much, so I'm not really qualified to speak on the subject. (But heck, that's never stopped me before, eh? Very Happy)

I think the Dax gimmick sounded good in the producers planning sessions but not really in the writers room.

She is kind of a redundant character as played and written. Kind of like Penny in Lost in Space, nothing she does really could not be done by another character on the show . . . so far.

I understand that she was supposed to be the sexy "Spock" of the show.

I'm willing to give her more time to develop, but from what you posted it seems she gets more 2 dimensional later in the season.

Anyway, episode 9 "The Passenger"

Not bad, it could have been more suited for TNG than DS9, but it works well enough. It held my interest for the duration.

Siddig was in a bit over his head in this episode.

"Move along Home"

I'm not really sure what to think about this one.

Kind of silly, but somewhat interesting.

Dungeons and Dragons in real life.

Is it DS9's "And the Children Shall Lead"?

Could be.

"The Negus"

Actually better than I expected. Some nice Ferengi tidbits.

But for me it was the schoolhouse easter egg.

Behind Chief O'Brien is a board with alien's on it.

A tribble, a Horta maybe, The Deneb brain cell, but the best is Sylvia and Korob, in their natural state.

"The Vortex"

Another better than expected episode.

Not perfect, Sending Croden off with the Vulcans solves nothing. It only buy's a bit of time.

Also Sisko agrees to return Croden way too easily. He should
have gotten more information before handing him over to what seemed like a death penalty.

"Battle lines"

Kind of a silly, pointless episode. Unless Kia Opaka returns in a future episode, which I'm guessing she does.

I'm up to episode 11 in season 2.

So far not too bad, a few stinkers and a few gems and a bunch of good episodes.

Dax is developing as is Odo.

So far they are treating the Bajoran self rule realistically.
It's not all wine and roses when the bad guys leave.

Sisko and Quark are both deeper than I expected. A pleasant
surprise.

Garak.......... Interesting.

Wow, I miss the days when Netflix had all the Star Trek series for its customers to stream, and I could just click on an episode and watch it without leaving the couch! Sad

Yah, They are on Paramount + now. Thats another $5.99 a month, but you get all the Star Treks.

Between Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney, Apple TV, Peacock, and Paramount things are getting expensive!

Well I finished the series.

Season 7 was interesting, The Founders issue was not settled at all (as we find out later). Neither are the Cardassians, or the Romulans for that matter.

What happened to Odo, And Sisko? We know but we don't.

My overall impression is positive, many good episodes and few stinkers.

I'm thinking DS9 is superior to TNG, mainly because of seasons 6 and 7 of both. They were a low point for TNG but a high point for DS9.

TOS is still my favorite.

I'd certainly agree that all Trek's are not created equal. I, for example, prefer Star Trek: Voyager over all the rest. But many folks would disagree with that.

Ah, well . . . to each his own, eh? Confused
