So sorry to belatedly read about the passing of former child actor George "Foghorn" Winslow this past June at the age of 69.

George was hilarious for his deep voice & deadpan delivery in films & television.

My favorite film of his is Mr. Scoutmaster with Clifton Webb. George had a lead role in the film.

His sf genre connection would be Monkey Business with Cary Grant & Ginger Rogers.

I remember Mr. Scoutmaster from Saturday Night at the Movies in the early 1960s, and I've been trying to see it again for decades.

I forgot to include George's other sf film: The Rocket Man, 1954.

I have never seen it before but would like to do so.

Believe it or not one of the writers is legendary comedian Lenny Bruce!

The plot has an orphan (George) come into possession of a ray gun that compels people to tell the truth.

Watched the trailer on YT. I see that the ray gun also has other functions besides making folks speak the truth.

Rather clever concept when you think about it for a 50s film.

In many sf films & TV shows there would be interesting gizmos created for the production. However, often the device in question would perform one & only one function.

As real science marches along we now possess gadgets that are capable of numerous things, such as our phones, pc, & so forth.

Now it seems kinda odd to watch films or tv shows from the past & observe the contraption can only do one thing.

I'd say that the Tricorder on the classic ST series was one of the earliest gadgets that was able to perform multiple functions.

Some later sf TV series after Star Trek would catch on regarding having a device perform multiple-functions.

Space:1999 had 2 such gizmos.
The Com-Lock could do audio/visual communications,serve as a security key for restricted areas,& some other stuff I cannot remember.
The Stun Gun had 4 settings to it.Some was destructive but some were like welding abilities.

On the ST episode/pilot Assignment:Earth,the lead character of Gary Seven possessed a Servo.It was made to look like a pen but it was really a sophisticated high tech device with various abilities.

I've seen THE ROCKET MAN two or three times. It's very light...kinda like an extended episode of Leave it to Beaver. The characters are so likeable that you just have to like the movie. Odd things stick in my mind about the movie like the drunk driver in the Kaiser Darrin sports car and the fact that the Rocket Man spoke with a French accent Smile

This used to play regularly when our national science fiction TV network showed old movies every night.

Now the only movies they show are SHARKNADO, SHARKNADO 2, SHARKNADO 3, MEGASHARK VS. MECHASHARK, MEGASHARK VS. KOLOSSUS, MEGASHARK VS. MEGACROCODILE, MEGASHARK VS. MEGA PIRANHA...

While watching "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" tonight I was reminded that Mr. Winslow is in that one. It may be his only color appearance, and he certainly has some good moments with Marilyn Monroe!
