This is my model of the Voyager flying submarine from a show I watched on TV as a kid, the 1969 Saturday morning cartoon series Fantastic Voyage...

The kit is produced by Moebius Models. Here's an excerpt from Wikipeda about the show...

Fantastic Voyage is an American animated science fiction TV series based on the famous 1966 film directed by Richard Fleischer. The series consists of 17 episodes each running 30 minutes. It was run on ABC-TV from September 14, 1968 through January 4, 1969.

Premise
Fantastic Voyage is the story of the C.M.D.F. (Combined Miniature Defense Force), a secret United States government organization that possessed the ability to reduce people to microscopic size.

The main characters were Commander Jonathan Kidd; biologist Erica Lane; scientist Busby Birdwell; and a "master of mysterious powers" known as Guru. The team was reduced in size — for 12 hours only — and traveled around in a microscopic flying submarine, the Voyager, doing battle against the unseen, unsuspecting enemies of the free world (both criminal and germinal matter). The series featured the voices of Marvin Miller, Jane Webb, and Ted Knight who did the opening narration .

Aurora released the original kit of the Voyager only months before the show's cancellation; as a result, there was only one press run making it one of the rarest Aurora kits ever produced. More recently, Moebius Models retooled from an original kit and released a reproduction Voyager kit with the original box artwork.

Those familiar with the submarine model used in the film version of Fantastic Voyage will no doubt notice that the Voyager as drawn in the cartoon has nothing at all in common with the design of the Proteus in the movie. That having been said, I still consider it a cool design in its own right.

Lights on! The model features my own LED lighting system and is powered off a 9 volt battery in the rear of the ship accessible by means of a removable panel on the underside.

A few in-progress pics:

Several modifications were made to the kit provided figures which were lacking in detail. Among other things, I added glasses to Busby Birdwell, Gave Jonathan Kidd his eyepatch, and enlarged Guru's turban. The crew were painted with a fine brush; a sharpened toothpick was used to dot the pupils of their eyes. TSDS provided aftermarket decals for the instrument panels, engine exhaust ports, engine turbine intakes at the front of each wing, and landing gear markings on the underside of the model.

Hot tamale, Stevo, you got buckets of talent! Thanks for sharing these masterpieces with us.

This one, for example, knocked my socks right into the laundry hamper!

You made a tiny teeny cockpit with a little bitty person, illuminated by a near-microscopy light, and a miniature pterodactyl which is about to eat it!

(Oh, wait That's a pair of pliers. Sorry, my bad . . . ) Embarassed

Until you posted about the cartoon series recently, I'd never heard of it! And when I clicked on your link to the Youtube video, I discovered that they've got entire episodes. The one at the link below has a terrific picture, but I'm not sure the other episodes look quite as good.

But I intend to watch 'em! Very Happy

Thanks Bud! The episodes were quite exciting to me when I was a kid. Not sure they pack the same punch with me as an adult but they're still fun to watch if only for nostalgia's sake.

Here are some more work-in-progress pics I found in another album over on PhotoBucket...

Busby Birdwell with his glasses made from brass wire. I also did some putty work on his face to enlarge his ears, nose, and chin:

Erica Lane who I didn't need to do too much to other than resculpting her ponytail a bit:

Jonathan Kidd with his eyepatch. I also worked on his nose and chin to give him those chiseled good looks:

Jonathan in the cartoon ready for action:

Guru with his enlarged turban. I was pretty proud of how his eyes turned out:

The entire crew next to a nickel for size comparison:

This is the brush I used on these guys:

Busby's cockpit showing the position of the LED.
I added a ring made from clear acrylic tubing to spread the light all around the rim:

TSDS decal sheet:

Another cabin angle with a good view of Erica's station:

Closeup of the engine exhaust ports:

And a stern view of the Voyager from the cartoon:

I like the effect of the pencil(?) lines along the edges and seams.

Thanks for noticing. I ran the edge of a pencil tip along the edges of the model to simulate the hard lines drawn for the cartoon ship's contours.

This was a fine looking ship & the model you've done is excellent!

Was the vessel called Voyager in the animated TV series?
It was called the Proteus in the '66 FV movie.
