The quality of the Youtube videos is a fairly good, but no where near the quality of the DVDs or the Blu-rays. (I own both. Very Happy )

And the aspect ratio isn't widescreen like both The Space Children and The Colossus of New York are on the DVDs — which pleased the hell out of me when I first got the discs and saw them in widescreen for the first time since that night at the drive-in back in 1958 when I was the tender age of ten.

Butch and/or Pye-Rate-
I have a 1080p copy of SPACE CHILDREN, but it's BW of course. I would love to see a copy of your color version, even if it is only VHS quality. Did you ever find the tape?

There is no copy guard on it. I'll try to find someone who still has the copying machines and enhancers (cleaner-upper machines). If I (or anyone) can find a person and/orplace that can do this I'll surrender my copy and then we can all have our own prints.

There are no color copies of The Space Children, and Butch never had what he mentions above.

This movie was filmed in B&W, and it's never even been colorized.

I have read the entire thread. It's been almost a year since he made his claim, but I was hoping that Butch really did have said color copy- it would be fun to see even a poor recording of it. (By the way, the youtube video that Butch mentioned is a dead link).

I don't quite understand the relationship between Butch and Pye-rate. Do they have separate video libraries, or are they both referring to the same collection? Well, neither person has responded yet, so although I'm doubtful, I still have my fingers hopefully crossed.

Butch claims to have a huge movie collection which he stores in a Faraday cage to protect it from EM bursts. (It's not the most outlandish claim Butch has made over the years, I promise.)

I've talked with Butch on the phone dozens of time in the last six years, and to Pye-rate about six times. The two men are roommates in a house on a large piece of land in Washington state.

To the best of my knowledge, Pye-rate does not have a video library of his own. What he does have, however, is a wonderful 16-year-old daughter who we know as Eadie here on All Sci-Fi! Very Happy

Concerning Butch's alleged VHS tape of a color version of The Space Children, I asked him about it several times during some of those phone conversations. He gave me several imaginative excuses for why he hadn't sent it yet, including one that involved a "friend who lives in Mexico" who currently had it and promised to mail it back. Rolling Eyes

Alltare, I wouldn't bother about crossing my fingers. Sad

I seem to remember a claim about a VHS tape of a workprint of ST:TMP, too... but that's all lost to the old board.

__________

This is another low budget sci-fi film from the fifties whose reputation has been sullied by Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's not a great film or some landmark, but has an intense fan base, usually those who first watched it as kids in the late fifties (I'm not one of these — not quite that age).

In the plot, the alien invader is a glowing, large brain-shaped creature which influences a group of kids, using them in a plan involving a nearby rocket test site. Directed by Jack Arnold, who did some good ones way back then.

BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10

Perhaps the biggest fan of this film is a web personality named Bud Brewster — yes, the name of the lead child here.

He and others point out that the alien creature does not really control the kids, as most viewers believe. Here's one explanation of it all (click)

Review by Bruce Cook (posted on 20-Jun-2005)

Director Jack Arnold's least-known movie is his best piece of work — and his own personal favorite, a labor of love. Paramount execs told Arnold to make a second feature for The Colossus of New York, and they didn't care what the story was about, as long as it was science fiction.

So, Arnold did something from the heart, a moving and highly intelligent story whose message is based on Matthew 18:3 (look it up if you're interested). Most reviewers botch the synopsis of the story, so beware of everything you read about it. For example, the alien does not "control" the children. They help the alien voluntarily. It's an important point. Unfortunately, younger viewers between the ages of 15 and 25 often miss the whole point of the film.

Strangely enough, kids and mature adults have less trouble seeing the merits of this little gem. Lose your cynicism and try to see "The Space Children" as a unique attempt to carry an important concept from Jack Arnold's mind to yours. If your mind is open (not to mention your heart), you'll get the message.

A recent issue of SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE #73 features this film as its main article, titled "THE SPACE CHILDREN reunion"

_____________

Interviews by Paul and Donna Parla; written & edited by Anthony Di Salvo

The article mentions how this film has its fans but it has dropped off the radar and is rated only 2.1 (out of 10) at IMDb (it's 3.7 now, so 'someone' must have given it a great rating recently).

MST3K is the probable culprit for this low rating — this can start a separate discussion on how film viewers are easily influenced by such shows, i.e. MST3K says the film is bad, so it must be bad is as far the thinking goes for many people.

The article in SCARY MONSTERS #73, however, calls the film "an unsung gem of the genre" — high praise indeed.

It's intended for kids, so if you were a kid when you first saw this . . . well. It has also been thought of as a 'junior league' THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (51). The article summarizes the plot and then analyzes its effectiveness & that of the kid actors — who weren't really actors.

The article also points out that Michel Ray plays the lead "Space Child" — Bud Brewster. By strange coincidence, I just watched most of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA recently (I've seen it many times, a long film). It was only during this latest screening that I realized that it was the same Michel Ray playing one of the Arab boys befriended by Lawrence.

Anyway, there's an interview in the article with Ray, who left acting to become an Olympic skier for England and then married into the Heineken company.

There's then an interview with Johnny Crawford, the 2nd lead "Space Child" — Ken Brewster. He really liked the message of the film. Then a short interview with Peggy Webber, who played the mom of Ray's character. For fans of this film, this issue is a must.

I will mention that Ray remembered more about LAWRENCE OF ARABIA than THE SPACE CHILDREN (he was older for the '62 film, surrounded by great actors).

But he was provided with a TV version DVD of the film to reacquaint himself with it and went into a short time warp — he liked it more than E.T.

Well, I'll be damned . . . Laughing

I've been puzzled as to why Bogmeiser kept his message board a secret from me and the members of the old board between 2010 and 2015, when he must have known I would gladly have promoted it to our members.

I've always thought that message boards should work together instead of discouraging the mere mention of "other boards" on their own site.

But when I read his review of The Space Children today I was grateful to him for his kind words about the movie . . . and about me.

I'm also grateful to him from making me aware of the Scary Monsters issue that includes the 1991 article about The Space Children and the interviews with the cast.

It was a delightful bit of news to learned that the interviewers showed a "TV DVD" of the movie (obviously a copy from the 1986 airing on the USA network) to Mr. Michel de Carvalho, (aka Michel Ray) in 1991 to refresh his memory about the film he starred in, 33 years earlier.

Back in the early 2000s a gray market provider of rare DVDs called Spooky Tom upgraded the copy he was selling when I sent him my original VHS tape. The enhanced copy he made and began selling became the best source of this fine movie.

I sent a copy of it to actress Peggy Webber (the mother in the movie) and she thanked by email when she shared it with her grandchildren. Very Happy

Is it possible that one of Spooky Tom's copies was acquired for Mr. Michel Ray, aka Michel Carvalho, to refresh his memory about the movie in which he starred? Shocked

I've wondered for decade just what billionaire Michel de Carvalho thought about the movie he starred in when he was 14 years old. And so I was thrilled to finally learn that after seeing it again, he "liked it more than E.T."!

Ironically it never occurred to me that the The Space Children is indeed similar to E.T., in that it's a story about a young boy (and his six friends) who meet a benevolent alien and have an incredible experience which ends with all the adults being baffled and left out of the loop, so to speak! Cool

I found a copy of that issue of Scary Monsters at Oldies.com and order it. It will be here in a few days, and I'll be making a long post right here about what it includes.

I wonder how Bogmeiser found that review I wrote for —

— in 2005, which was a year before the very first version of All Sci-Fi was created. Originally I wrote that review as an IMDB user comment, but I don't know what prompted me to add it to NNDB.

Anyway, I'm now more determined than ever to rescue Andrew Bogdan's reviews from his "lost message board" and preserve them here on All Sci-Fi.

His review of The Space Children was posted on his board on March 25th, 2010 — less than a month after he created The Base of Galactic Science Fiction on February 28th, so it must have been one of the earliest of the 3,265 post he added over the next five years.

If your a fan of The Space Children, you're a fan of Michel Ray . . . and you might also be partial to the famous beer that he and his lovely wife (Freddie Heineken's daughter) own!

Michel appears briefly at the 00:22 mark of the commercial below. It also has stop motion! Very Happy

Today I discovered that Wikipedia has a pitiful little one-paragraph plot summary for The Space Children! Here's the complete "summary".
________________________________

A giant brain from space visits Earth and communicates telepathically with the children of a group of scientists who are planning a nuclear war. The alien brain helps the children to sabotage their parents' rockets to prevent the war.
________________________________

I've written several plot summaries for Wikipedia articles, and by gum I'm going to submit the one below to replace that poor attempt above!

Here's what I've just submitted. Please send me a PM concerning the typos I'm sure it has, and I'll edit it right on Wikipedia. Very Happy

Wikipedia might request that it be shortened, something they often do if they decide a summary has "too much detail". If that happens, you can view the revised one on Wikipedia and tell me if it's still effective after I cut it down a bit.
________________________________

Plot

The Brewster family (Dave, Anne, Bud, and Ken) arrive at the main gate of a seaside trailer park which houses the personnel who are working with the military to complete the Thunderer, a hugh rocket which will place an atomic device in permanent Earth orbit.

Dave Brewster is a technician who works for the company that provided parts for the Thunderer, a top secret project which will allow the United States to strike back within minutes at any nation who attacks America. The orbiting atomic device can be brought down on a selected city by remote control.

Seven children from various families meet on the beach and become friends. They all live at the trailer park, and their families are involved with the secret project. While playing together, the children observe a strange beam of light which shines down onto a rocky section of the beach, approximately a mile away. As the children watch, a small glowing object slowly floats down amidst the beam and disappears among the rocks.

As the children watch the glowing object descend, Bud Brewster (Michel Ray), behaves as if he's listening to an unheard voice. He smiles and nods several times, showing no fear or confusion, despite the strange situation.

That evening, after a community cookout involving all the parents and kids, the seven children ask permission to take a walk on the beach. They leave the adults and head directly to a place among the rocks along the beach where they encounter a small, glowing alien life form (shaped somewhat like a human brain), resting on the sand. The children’s behavior makes it obvious they’re receiving the alien’s thoughts, and they all understand that Bud Brewster has been designated their leader while they perform a vital task for the small glowing alien.

Bud and his brother Ken (Johnny Crawford) return to their trailer and tell their parents about the alien. Dave Brewster becomes angry at his son, believing that he’s lying to excuse the fact that he and Ken stayed out so late and worried their parents. But when Dave grabs Bud in a threatening manner, Dave’s arm is suddenly paralyzed. Bud calmly explains that he and all the children are under the protection of the alien.

Confused by the situation, but convinced now that his sons aren’t lying, Dave Brewster accompanies six of the seven children back to the rocky area where the alien is hidden. But one of the children, Tim Gamble (Johnny Washbrook) is roughly accosted by his drunken, abusive stepfather, Joe Gamble (Russell Johnson). Breaking away from the man, Tim runs after the group, but Gamble chases him, shouting violent threats that he'll severely punish Tim for disobedience.

Joe catches up with Tim before he can join his friends, and he throws the boy to the ground. Then he picks up a piece of driftwood and raises it to strike the boy savagely. At that moment, the alien is shown in its hiding place among the rocks, and it suddenly blazes with light. Joe Gamble is thrown forcefully backwards, thus saving Tim from harm. Terrified by what happened, Joe flees the scene.

Moments later, Tim joins the other children and Dave Brewster as they arrive at the site of the alien. Acting on the alien’s instructions (conveyed silently to Bud), Dave Brewster gently carries the alien back to the trailer. Once there, Bud explains to his parents that they have to keep the alien safe until the following evening — but he won’t explain why. Anne Brewster (Peggy Webber) is understandably frightened for her family’s safety because of the possible threat this bizarre being from space might pose.

When Tim Gamble enters his own family’s trailer, he finds the dead body of Joe Gamble. Minutes later an ambulance arrives. In the trailer next door, Bud and Ken tell their parents that the alien killed Joe because he threatened Tim’s life.

The next morning the Brewsters discover that the alien has doubled in size, now measuring several feet across. Dave Brewster receives a phone call from the base where the Thunderer is located, informing him that the rocket will be launched that night. He and Anne Brewster realize that the alien’s purpose on Earth is somehow connected to the launch of the Thunderer.

While Dave is still on the phone, Bud and Ken are shown carrying the alien out and taking it to a cave along the beach. Dave knows he must alert the authorities, and he hurries to the base so he can warn them about the possible threat from the alien. But when he meets with Dr. Wahrman (Raymond Bailey) and Colonel Manly (Richard Shannon), his voice is suddenly paralyzed, and he passes out when he desperately tries to write a message.

During the next few hours the children are shown quietly moving about the base, performing mysterious tasks while the alien exerts mental control over various people and objects (such as sentries and locked gates) to ensure that the children’s secret mission is carried out.

Dr. Wahrman visits Dave Brewster in the infirmary. Now fully recovered, Dave discovers that he is no longer prevented from speaking to Dr. Wahrman about the alien. But Wahrman realizes that he too will be prevented from speaking to others about the alien, so the two men drive out to the cave in which the alien is now located. The alien has grown even larger, an unearthly mass of slowly pulsating tissue, glowing with an eerie light which varies in brightness from moment to moment.

Dr. Wahrman tries to communicate with the alien, hoping to learn what it is directing the children to do, but the alien remains silent. Wahrman and Brewster give up and rush back to the base just as the Thunderer is about to be launched. They both realize they can not attempt to interfere, because the alien will prevent it.

When the countdown reaches zero and the launch button is pressed, an explosion within the nosecone destroys the nuclear warhead, rendering the Thunderer useless. The children had succeeded in sabotaging the warhead.

Wahrman orders the soldiers to follow him back to the cave, where they confront the seven children as they calmly stand shoulder-to-shoulder, blocking the cave’s entrance. Suddenly the huge alien mass glides majestically out of the cave behind the children and rises up into the sky. As the adults gaze upward to watch the alien ascend on a beam of light like the one that brought it to Earth, Dr. Wahrman asks Bud why the Thunderer was destroyed.

Bud tells the adults that his group did what other groups of children have done in several other countries — they all sabotaged the rockets that would have carried dangerous nuclear devices into space, making it far too easy for mankind to destroy itself if such devices were ever used. The aliens were concerned about the welfare of mankind, so they relied upon teams loyal children all around the world to prevent mankind from making a terrible mistake.

________________________________

Today I made a few revisions and corrections in my Wikipedia summary, and I pasted the new version into the post above.

So far, Wikipedia hasn't flagged the summary for being too long, so perhaps they feel like its well written enough to justify the length.

I apologize to any of All Sci-Fi members who haven't seen The Space Children for spoiling the ending in my summary, but as a general rule Wikipedia summaries include spoilers with no posted warnings.

However, I promise that the movie will be enjoyable even if you've read my summary before seeing it. There are plenty of fascinating moments I didn't mention, so I urge everyone to watch The Space Children. It's one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies — and for me, it's in a class by itself in many ways. Cool

Netflix doesn't have it, but it is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

For some odd reason the DVD is $39.99 (and it says there's only one left), but the Blu-ray is just $19.95. I own both, because the Blu-ray came out about six months after I bought the DVD in 2012 — which I was delighted to get after waiting over fifty years to get one.

Prior to that, a guy who sold gray market versions of sci-fi and horror movies under the name "Spooky Tom" was about the only source of DVDs. I had a VHS tape from the 1986 airing on the USA network (the first time it had ever been on TV, as far as I know), but I bought a DVD-R from Tom in 2003 and discovered that it was made from the same USA airing. The USA logo appeared on screen at the same moments in the movie.

My VHS tape was significantly better than his DVD-R, and the commercials had been cleanly omitted when I made the tape. I got in touch with Tom and offered to send it to him so he could upgrade his product. I'd already made a DVD-R of it, so I wasn't concerned about loosing the tape.

He accepted my offer, and after copying it, he sent back both the tape and an improved DVD-R of it which he'd enhanced a bit. Very Happy

From that time until the DVD and Blu-ray came out in 2012, Tom's copies of my tape were probably the best version available of the movie. I'm kinda proud of that. Wink

From 2002 until about 2005 I exchanged emails with Miss Peggy Webber, the mother in The Space Children and the founder of C.A.R.T. (the California Artist Radio Theater), an organization which produces audio performances of famous plays, starring many well-known actors.

__________

Miss Webber was delighted by my praise of her performance in The Space Children, and she shared anecdotes from the time she spent making the film, along with other interesting stories about her career.

Space Children Trivia, compliments of Peggy: The reason the mother's hair is pulled back all through the movie is because the hairdresser was frustrated with the way the wind on the beach keep messing up Peggy's hairdo!

I purchased several DVDs from C.A.R.T., including a performance of Treasure Island in which the role of young Jack Hawkins was played by none other than . . . Miss Peggy Webber!

She was marvelous!

__________

Please note that Peggy also scripted, directed, and edit the production. And her husband, Sean McClory, is listed in the cast. Very Happy

Here's what IMDB says about Miss Webber and C.A.R.T.
________________________________

Peggy Webber is the founder and director of C.A.R.T., the California Artists Radio Theatre. For over thirty years the California Artists Radio Theatre has presented the best in dramas, comedies and musicals, featuring renowned actors from Hollywood, Broadway, Great Britain and Ireland, performing award-winning scripts adapted from modern and classic stories, books and plays. Ms. Webber has provided performances herself, including her portrayal of Jim Hawkins in an audio version of Treasure Island.
________________________________

Peggy is obviously involved in science fiction through C.A.R.T. as well. I found this picture on the C.A.R.T. website.

Eventually I sent her a DVD-R of my copy of The Space Children, which she said she had not seen since it was first released, nor had her three children (Duane, Kevin, and Cathleen with her husband, Sean McClory).

Fandango has a wonderful biography about Miss Webber which concludes with this sentence.
________________________________

Her biggest movie role was in Jack Arnold's anti-war science fiction drama The Space Children (1958), as the mother of two children who come into contact with an alien intelligence.
________________________________

I'd like to think that my DVD-R might have been enjoyed by Peggy Webber McClory and her family at some point in time. She's now 93 and might have both grandchildren and great grandchildren — all of whom can now enjoy The Space Chldren on Blu-ray! Very Happy

The issue of Scary Monsters with the great article about The Space Children is available on eBay for just $5.00 in "like new" condition. I bought a copy a while back and loved the interviews!

Better yet, buy it straight from the Scary Monsters Magazine website for only $3.00!

The website says it was "published in 2010", but the original issue came out in the earlier 1990s, so this a recent reprint. That means the condition will be "mint"!
