Gene Barry (born as Eugene Klass) is best known for his starring roles in three popular TV shows. His first was "Bat Masterson" (1959-1961), in which he plays the debonair Western legend.

In the middle 1960s he starred in "Burke's Law", playing a millionaire who, because of his interest in criminology, served as a detective on the Los Angles police force. Detective Burke was chauffeured around LA in his Rolls Royce, making calls on his car-phone (a novelty back then) while he investigated baffling murder cases.

The third show was "The Name of the Game" (1968-1970), in which he plays the millionaire publisher of a then-fictitious magazine called People.

Mr. Barry's contribution to science fiction during the 1950s consisted of starring roles in two feature films and two episodes of "Science Fiction Theatre". In "The 27th Day" he plays a newspaper reporter who is kidnapped by an alien. In "War of the Worlds" he plays Professor Clayton Forester, America's top man in nuclear physics. His portrayal in both films is a joy to watch.

Mr. Barry passed away in 2009. Ironically, Gene Barry's first and last sci-fi film appearances were in both versions of "War of the Worlds", as shown in his filmography below.

The Girl, the Gold Watch & Dynamite (Syndicated 1981) was a sequel to The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything (Syndicated 1980).

He was also seen with Ann Robinson at the end of War of the Worlds (2005) as the grandfather and grandmother of Tom Cruise's characters kids.

I admired Spielberg for including them, and I suppose he filmed their brief cameos as long shots just to preserve the somber mood of the scene, rather than have old timers like me see them up close and start thinking, "Wow . . . they sure look old."
