If TV (or the movies) was capable of doing an honest adaptation of Tom Swift or a faithful reboot of Johnny Quest, I'd be all in.

Unfortunately, I think the sociopolitical climate in the media would make this wish unlikely. The Johnny Quest DVDs were edited for cultural insensitivity (Race Bannon no longer calls the natives "heathen savages"). I note in the upcoming netflix reboot of Lost in Space, Judy Robinson is a different color than her brother and sister...and Dr. Smith is a chick.

And Disney is the worst offender in it's zeal for politically correct inclusion.

I fear any modern attempt to redo these "male based" (oh the humanity) adventure stories will result in a series that is homogenized to pointless blandness. Non-offensive inclusion will rule the production meetings.**

I hate to be that guy who says, "the book was better" but I think this really is a case where Tom Swift might be used as a good reason to get young people to hone their reading skils. I don't want to see a trailer for Tom Swift...starring Jaden Smith as Swift and members of the Rainbow Coalition try to stop evil corporations from fracking on Mars.

**Related: the editor of Mother Jones magazine says that "Tomahawk" cruise missiles are offensive to native Americans (not kidding).

True, but it's a representation of a cartoon vehicle. If the thing were life size, well -- "It'll never fly, Orville."

I must confess, I'm bother by that HUGH vertical stabilizer. Seems like it should about this size.

Perhaps the magazine meant that Tomahawk cruise missiles were offense to Native Americans when they're fired at the reservations! Shocked

What about about all those other weapons of mass destruction? Does this mean that the AIM-7 Sparrow missile is offensive to bird watchers?

And that the AIM-9 Sidewinder is offensive to desert reptiles?

How 'bout the AGM-65 Maverick? Is it offensive to cattle? (Or to people who prefer to be different!)

And the AGM-84 Harpoon surely must be offensive to to the Save The Whales people?

The International Olympic Committee is surely offended by the FGM-148 Javelin!

Uh-oh! Look out! The AGM-114 Hellfire must piss off those Bible-thumping fundamental Christians like crazy!

Yes indeed, we have GOT to put a stop to this offensive tradition of naming weapons of war in a manner that's bound to raise the hackles of sensitive, self-involved, gutless, completely neurotic people!

It's an outrage!
Shocked

A few years back, I was at Disney world during the Christmas season. I was at the Village waiting for the shuttle bus back to my hotel. Over the P.A. system they are playing "Silver and Gold" from Rudolph. In this version, they had removed ALL references to Christmas, IN A CHRISTMAS SONG! Shocked

Sorry to hear about the DVDs, I was thinking of buying them, but not if they are censored.

David.

I am also bumping this one to the top, to get the two threads, both very good, on the Johnny Quest TV show, together, with the question, shouldn't this shorter one page thread be combined with the longer, two page thread on Johnny Quest?

If that is possible?

And, I do NOT think there should be any remakes of Johnny Quest.

Nope, sorry, I can't take other members posts and move them to a different thread, nor can I can combine an entire thread with an existing one. Boards with newer software might be able to do that, but ours can't.

However, if all the folks who posted in the duplicate (more recent) thread re-post their messages here, I can delete the duplicate.

I apologize for not catching the duplicate when it was first created and asking Gord to help me fix it. That would have been easy.

But I locked the other one so that all future replies will have to be made here.

The more recent BluRay set is not censored and has the correct credits at the end of each episode.

The Moebius model kit was a fun build.
The vertical stabilizer is ridiculous from a real world perspective but it was hella cool in the cartoon!

Bud, thanks for coming up with a good solution to the problem.

I hope the other two or three people posting to the Johnny Quest thread, will repeat their posts on this much longer thread, which I will now do with the only one I made on the other thread.

Johnny Quest was a Real Favorite of Mine.

I was very disappointed with the episode featuring the Gargoyle.

At the end, the camera zoomed in on a closeup of the Gargoyle, who I was fully expecting to give us all a wink, but I am sad to say that was not the case.

I really liked the instrumental theme song of the Johnny Quest show.

Were there ever any lyrics written for the theme song?

Since you're new the board, I wanted to express my appreciation by taking the liberty of combining your three separate comments into one dynamic post!

I think that doing so gives it the impact it deserves. Cool

A great documentary on this iconic animated series!

Jonny Quest, often casually referred to as The Adventures of Jonny Quest, is the original American science fiction/adventure animated television series that started the franchise. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for Screen Gems, and created and designed by comic-book artist Doug Wildey. Inspired by radio serials and comics in the action-adventure genre, including Doc Savage, Tom Swift, The Adventures of Tintin and Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy, the series featured more realistic art, characters, and stories than Hanna-Barbera's previous cartoon programs. This show closely parallels the juvenile Rick Brant series.

It was the first of several Hanna-Barbera action-based adventure shows, which would later include Space Ghost, The Herculoids, and Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, and ran on ABC in primetime on early Friday nights for one season from 1964 to 1965.

After two decades in reruns, during which it appeared on all three major United States television networks of the time, new episodes were produced for syndication in 1986. Subsequently, telefilms, a comic-book series, and a modernized revival series, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, were produced in the 1990s.

This was a great series with intelligently written stories presented with realisticly styalized animation that could be enjoyed by all ages! Truly a classic for all to enjoy!

Loved this show as a kid. Favorite episode was either the one with the Pteradactyl or the one with the saucer and the ball shaped robot that walked on eight long spider legs.

Race being based on Jeff Chandler is so obvious now in hindsight. The intro music was so tense and suspenseful too. Real 60’s jazzy vibe.

"The Tom Swift and Linda Craig Mystery Hour"from July 03,1983 was a made-for-TV-movie that also served as a pilot for a weekly series.

Willie Aames("Eight Is Enough")portrayed genius inventor Tom Swift and Lori Loughlin("Full House")was Tom's girlfriend Linda.

To my knowledge it is the only time that someone produced a Tom Swift project for television while no one has produced a film project of the famous character.

Reportedly the TV-movie is pretty bad but I've never seen it before.

I'm puzzled that in this day and age with the astonishing level of special & visual FX available that nobody has tackled doing a Tom Swift sci~fi film or TV series?

Meanwhile both the Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew get revived periodically over the years.

Thanks to Gord Green for posting the visuals and links from the old one page thread, on April 09.

Just looking at the images is very enjoyable to me.

And, poor Bandit the dog is so small and at the bottom of the pictures, he can be easily overlooked, although I do well remember him along with all the other characters.

Jonny Quest Trivia: IMDB.

Originally intended to be an animated television series based on the classic radio serial "Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy."

Negotiations broke down between Hanna-Barbera Productions and the Jack Armstrong estate.

When noted artist Doug Wildey came aboard, he suggested with going with an original concept instead of anymore adaptations.

Jonny Quest bears a striking resemblance to the Rick Brant series of books published from 1947~1967 by Grossett & Dunlap.

Rick is the son of famed scientist Hartson Brant, they live and work on their own private island. They travel the world on all types of adventures---utilizing state of the art gadgetry--accompanied by ex-Marine Scotty, and sometimes Hindi boy Chado.

Palm Key Island in the Florida Keys is the Quest home.

Although the show garnered critical praise, it was canceled after one season due to its high production costs.

Each episode cost $64,000.

No one in the lead cast ever encounters their recurring foe, Dr. Zin, face-to-face.

Tim Matheson (Animal House, 1942) voiced Johnny. In the credits he's listed as Tim Matthieson.

John Stephenson was replaced by Don Messick as the voice of Dr. Benton Quest due to Stephenson sounding to similar to Mike Road who provided the voice of Race Bannon.
