I read this while watching Mission Asteroid on the Science Channel.
Great program. I couldn't find a link I could post that would allow us to watch it online. If somebody else finds one, please post it here. It's a "must see" program for space geeks. _________________ ____________

Okay, so that's the SCIENCE. Now let's add the FICTION!
________________________________
Try this idea.
Several relatively large asteroids hit the Earth, mostly in the oceans, causing tsunamis, though a few do hit on land. New astronomical detection equipment is developed, and NASA's Near Earth Object Program informs the governments of the world that these objects are a much greater threat to humanity's survival than previously thought.
A group of concerned world leaders begin to promote the idea that we should regard the threat of more asteroid impacts as a kind of "attack" from an enemy, and as such we should ramp up our industries to a wartime level and build a fleet of spacecraft to defend ourselves from this "mindless enemy".
The story presents the idea that we're at war with the asteroids and have to defend ourselves aggressively. Think of this like a cosmic version of The Monolith Monsters. The crews of the ships which are built and sent out to "battle" the asteroids are similar to heavily armed warships, and the crewmen are like soldiers who have to go out in spacesuits to set charges on the giant rocks, placing the small nuclear devices into caverns and crevasses.
The surface of the spinning asteroids are dangerous to work on, and "soldiers" have conduct themselves like combat squads, attacking an enemy stronghold.
Once an asteroid is broken up by the charges, the spaceships have to "do battle" with the largest fragments while the debris cloud is expanding, and it's a race against time to get the largest ones that are heading towards Earth, before the debris could spreads too far apart!
Exciting scenes would include a literal "space race" between a ship and a sizable fragment whose course is taking it directly towards a populated area on Earth!
At the conclusion of the story, it's made clear that this war will continue for many years, and mankind needs to develop his technology as quickly as possible before our luck runs out and an asteroid too large to deflect or destroy threatens to annihilate mankind.
Wow. I'd love to see this movie! _________________ ____________
