Star Trek Deep Space 9 Thread
Designing the Defiant
By Nick Ottens - StarTrek.com

The script for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's third season episode —The Search — called for a new class of warship which it described as "a little clunky". The vessel "was built primarily for battle", it said, "not exploration or science."

The reason for introducing the ship was that executive producer Ira Steven Behr and the show's writers felt that mere runabouts couldn't be expected to defend the space station from the Dominion who had shown themselves capable of destroying a Galaxy class starship in the season two finale, "The Jem Hadar".

"We had all these plans for this Dominion," said Behr in an interview that was included in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's season three DVD, "and what were we going to go after them with? Shuttlecrafts?" He added, "You know, it just seemed ridiculous. So we needed a ship."

Yet it was the runabout which concept artist Jim Martin initially "beefed up" a little in his first designs for the ship. "I started with the cockpit windows," he recalled in an interview with Star Trek: The Magazine 1, 4 (August 1999), "and worked my way out, adding things on top of the runabout, making it look like they were adding systems and weapons to an existing ship."

The producers didn't like it, though. "After the idea for the runabout was shot down, it was replaced with the writers" idea that it was going to be a full-fledged fighting starship called the USS Valiant." But Herman Zimmerman, Star Trek's veteran production designer, cautioned Martin it should still look like something that hadn't been seen on the show before.

"The writers requested a small starship which was designed by the Federation to battle the Borg. I drew some familiar looking Starfleet designs but also included a drawing of a small, compact ship that I had done for an entirely different episode of DS9. This is the direction that they chose, I think it was because it was so unique."

The design was inspired by a Maquis fighter that Martin had previously designed for Deep Space Nine and bears resemblance to a small Cardassian vessel, later known as the Hideki class, that Sternbach designed for the season-two episode, "Profit and Loss."

Zimmerman's request for something unique was certainly met: the Defiant was the first Starfleet vessel without external warp nacelles.

Martin didn't quite recognize the impact it would have at first. "When you're in the art department and you're doing the job from episode to episode, you don't really think, "Boy, this is really going to revolutionize Federation design." You're getting a design out of the way. It's only after the fact that you think, "Wow, that was a different idea." I'm glad we took the chance to take a little bit of a departure."

The name Valiant was dropped in favor of Defiant out of fear that it would conflict with Star Trek: Voyager and its titular starship.

The design was refined further when Tony Meininger was tasked with creating the model. It was felt the design didn't quite look fast enough, so Meininger -- a car enthusiast -- drew from Ferrari posters to 'streamline" the ship, making it look more compact and sleek.

The Defiant was "digitalized" for Star Trek: First Contact by Vision Art and rendered by Industrial Light & Magic. For Deep Space Nine, a digital model was created by Digital Muse.

In the season seven episode "The Changing Face of Evil," the Defiant was destroyed -- but a replacement showed up just five episodes later. The ship was nearly destroyed in First Contact. Indeed, early drafts of the script suggested that it was to be destroyed. In a DVD commentary for the film, producer Ronald D. Moore explained that Behr had seen the script and objected to the needless destruction of it in a story that didn't even involve Deep Space Nine characters besides Worf. The Defiant was therefore allowed to survive the battle — "adrift but salvageable" — and hardly a mention of its participation in the battle with the Borg Cube was made in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I think I actually like the one on the left better than the design they ended up using — but hey, that's just me.

Thanks for the DS9 thread, Bulldogtrekker! Very Happy

Nice photo, nice model; thanks

I had wondered if Deep Space Nine had used a model or if the Enterprise was created on a computer.

Memory Alpha confirms that a model was used.

Quote:
...The original Enterprise, now in the Smithsonian museum exhibit, had been refurbished and altered slightly over the years. Knowing that fans would inspect every minor detail of this episode for consistency, the staff consulted sketches made for the original series and had a special set of plans made for the new model's construction. They even inspected it with a magnifying glass to ensure that everything was perfect...

And here is another photo of the model:

Catching Up with DS9's Melanie Smith

Most actors would kill to have one role for which they're known, even beloved. Melanie Smith can claim several. She was the sixth actress to play Emily Stewart Snyder on the soap opera As the World Turns; guest starred as Jerry's girlfriend Rachel in four episodes of Seinfeld, including the infamous "shrinkage" installment; and memorably appeared in one episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm as Larry's ex-girlfriend. And, to Star Trek fans, the former actress — more on that later — will forever be remembered for her six episodes as Tora Ziyal on Deep Space Nine. Smith was actually the third and final actress to play the character — Dukat's artist daughter -- and appeared in the most episodes as the character. StarTrek.com sat down with Smith a few weeks ago during Star Trek Las Vegas for an extensive interview. Here's what she had to say."

Did you know that there was a CD player made to look like the DS9 Defiant? It came out about 1996 or 1997.

I vaguely remember that it did not work so great or did not sell so well.

Here is a youtube video.

And here is an old Ebay listing:

Is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Underrated?
By Buldogtrekker

Hell, yes it is underrated Very Happy

Bud and I recently completed a synchro-chat of Stat Trek the Next Generation seasons 3-7, We skipped a few of the poorer Next Gen episodes.

I haven't seen Star Trek Deep Space Nine since it was originally on, in 1993-1999.

This week, Bud is being visited by his daughter and I am watching Star Trek Deep Space Nine alone, starting with season 4. I am having kidney stone problems and watching more TV than usual.

Why start with season 4?

Easy; Captain Sisko is bald in Season 4 and he appears to be more comfortable in the lead, Really. And Worf joins the series and The Way of the Warrior is a great episode.

I wonder why Paramount has never promoted Star Trek Deep Space Nine on DVD as much as their other Star Trek series. Deep Space 9 has not has a DVD re-release since it initially came out in 2003 in Region1 on DVD and is slightly hard to find.

Here is a recent photograph of most of the cast and producers.

Aron Eisenberg (Nog), Ira Steven Behr (EP), Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko), Michael Dorn (Worf), Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax), Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys), Armin Shimerman (Quark), Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax), Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun, Brunt), Rick Berman (EP), Penny Johnson Jerald (Kasidy Yates), Rene Auberjonois (Odo), and Chase Masterson (Leeta) (Photo: Twitter/Rene Auberjonois/Variety)

Main cast members Avery Brooks (Capt. Sisko), Colm Meaney (Chief O'Brien) and Alexander Siddig (Dr. Bashir) were apparently not at the shoot. Nor were recurring actors Andrew Robinson (Garak), Max Grodnchik (Rom) or Rosalind Chao (Keiko O'Brien).

I'm embarking on a series watch of DS9. When it was on 1st run I watched sporadically.

Watching Picard season 3, I see references to the Shape shifter war. I'd like to find out the back story.

This will take a while, 7 seasons, and I'm guessing that what I'm looking for is near the end.

Anyway I just finished the 1st 3 episodes.

So far my thoughts are it's better than I remembered but
underdeveloped, This is to be expected so early in the show.

Mark, a few years ago I could have watched these with you. Admittedly, I never acquired a taste for DS9, but my Netflix account allowed me to stream it.

So, we could have shared it as often as you liked. Very Happy

Sadly, Netflix no longer has it . . . and I no longer have Netflix. I think maybe my Amazon Prime membership could provide it — at a price per episode. Sad

Anyway, please tell Quark I'll gladly pay him one bar of Gold-pressed latinum if he'll give you a bottle of Romulan Ale so you can drink a toast to your friend, Bud. Mr. Green

I have a copy of the series on my computer to watch.

It is on Paramount+ also.

I can copy it onto a flash drive if you want. Romulan ale! I remember it fondly at Quarks in Las Vegas.

That's a generous offer, Mark. Very Happy

But after careful thought, I think I'll decline. I've often tried to get into DS9 but never succeeded, and I'd feel badly if you went to all that trouble and then I failed again to enjoy it when we shared it.

But thanks for offering. Very Happy

"Babel" and "Captive pursuit"

Not bad. Again Better than I expected.

Babel was an interesting episode, mostly well done.
A bit too much setup and a bit too fast of a conclusion.

Captive Pursuit was generally very well done and entertaining.

I guess I'll keep watching.

Q-less was Worth-less.

50 min of my life gone.
Such a contrived pointless episode.
