____

Also released as: 3000 A.D. and 1000 Years From Now

The date is the 29th century and the place is New York City, wrecked by an atomic war, populated by two types of humans: the "mutes" (mutants) and the "norms" (normal people).

Ironically, the mutes are peaceful and civilized, while the norms are sadistic perverts who wear Dark-Age costumes and lock up women in people-sized bird cages. The mutes raid the norms for non-radiation-poisoned women to be used for breeding. A third group, the "upriver people" worship the devil, but they're eventually drowned in a flooded tunnel under the Hudson river.

The plot, acting, and direction are pretty laughable, but there is one good matte shot (a jungle-covered New York City).

Starring Robert Clarke (Beyond the Time Barrier, The Hideous Sun Demon), Margaret Field, and William Schallert, all three of whom starred in The Man from Planet X the previous year.

Directed by Stuart Gilmore.

I'd really like to see this one because I enjoy Robert Clarke's other movies — The Astounding She-Monster, Beyond the Time Barrier, Captive Women, The Hideous Sun Demon (which he directed), The Incredible Petrified World, and The Man from Planet X.

That last movie also stars Margaret Field (the lovely mother of Sally Field), and she's Mr. Clarke's co-star in Captive Women. That plus the fact that this is the only Robert Clarke sci-fi movie I haven't seen (and one of the few 1950s sci-fi movies I haven't seen yet) makes me eager to see it.

YouTube acquired the full movie seven months ago.

I saw this in a run down movie theater in Times Square in the mid fifties and barely remembered it, including the title. Your chronological list of films cleared the clog in my mind and I went in search of more information.

Found a watchable print on Youtube and saw it for the first time in over sixty years. I've never seen it on television, although it is listed in Maltin's Film Guide, nor do I ever remember it being discussed anywhere.

You will understand why when you see it. Best to watch during a bright afternoon; at night, you will be asleep in about five minutes.

One of my projects has been to transcribe the dialog for this film, as I have also been doing with Bad Ronald, and Angel Angel Down We Go.

I posted my scripts in progress to CHFB, and one fan of the film on that message board, went so far as to purchase a copy of the script, which I probably should do myself, but with my not being able to work at my job due to the virus, I have more pressing things to do with my limited funds.

Here's a somewhat better screen shot of the New York ruins from the Youtube version from he link above. Wikipedia says these are matte paintings by Irving Block (who is credited with the FX, along with Jack Rabin).

Pretty impressive — although I had to enhance the brightness of the original screen shots considerably, so don't expect the scenes to look this good when you watch the video.

It's a rainy day here in North Carolina, so I guess I'll finally watch this "lost 50s sci-fi" movie, one of the very few I've never seen before! Shocked

IMDB says it was re-released in 1956 under the name 1000 Years from Now. In the United Kingdom the movie is known as 3000 A.D..

Hopefully I'll have a few encouraging words to say about it afterwards.

I'm happy to report that Captive Women is suprisingly well done and very enjoyable! Smile

The story has much more intelligence than I expected, and the plot is very complex. I highly recommend this movie, although if you watch it on you computer instead of a download on your TV, you won't be able to lighten the annoyingly dark image.

I'll admit that this movie is no face-paced nail bitter, but it does have its redeeming qualities — two of which are Robert Clarke and Margaret Fields in the lead roles. Miss Fields is Sally Fields mother, and both ladies are quite lovely.

Yes, I know . . . we've certainly seen better movies than this one. But we've sure as hell seen worse ones, too! Shocked

Keep Watching the Skies! Bill Warren.

KWTS } The film was also called 1000 Years from Now, the movie has little to offer. The basic premise is interesting, however, and was even then novel for films.

Except briefly in Rocketship XM, no film had yet dealt with the long-term aftereffects of atomic radiation. Little seen today, Captive Women is a curiosity that perhaps deserves another look, despite the severity of its contemporary reviews. It's not destined to be a classic, but it is unusual and probably would look better to today's viewers than it did to critics in 1952.

1952 Reviews:

The Motion Picture Exhibitor said "production values, performances and plot are generally unimpressive."

The Hollywood Reporter said "a pretentious, long-winded dissertation on the bleak future lying ahead . . . while the intent is certainly laudable, the pompous, hackneyed dialogue and the stilted performances make this a long 64 minutes."

Daily Variety said the film "is strictly for the exploitation houses . . . [The] picture is a dull, over-talkative piece of inept film making which never catches the imagination."

The Monthly Film Bulletin said that, "This preposterous story contrives to be both childish and absurd," and called it an "unattractive farrago."

Sidebar: Never have seen this film, but I did have to look up "farrago." Farrago: a confused collection : MIXTURE.

Well, Mike, just say the word and we can both download it using the Firefox downloader and then share it in a special All Sci-Fi Live Chat (<— link).
