I could not find any pictures of the diving chamber.

Their design seems to be a mixture of Harper Goff's "classic" Nautilus and elements from these 3 posters and some original (?) ideas.

Disney put a whole lot into the making of this movie. He really loved Verne. He put a whole lot into the making of Around the World in Eighty Days, too.

Slight correction, John. Although Around the World in 80 Days was indeed a big budget movie, it was not done by Disney. Very Happy

I always found it intriguing that TTLUTS was a hit for Disney, deservedly so, yet he really never seemed to want to do another serious sci-fi motion picture for some reason.

He did the Flubber movies in the 60s which had its basis in sci-fi,but they were comedic films.

I have always wondered why he never returned to dramatic sci-fi?

The one semi-exception to that statement is the 14-minute segment at the end of the 1955 Disney "Science Fact" episode, Man and the Moon. The fact the it packs so much into those 14 minutes (great sets, props, special effects, and acting) just breaks my heart.

This is absolutely amazing. If only they had done a science fiction feature with this same awesomne quality.

Nautilus Submarine has a nice examination of this matte shot from the movie, posted by orzel-w!

Sadly, you have to register just to see the forum.

The problem with that shot is there's no attempt to do anything at the edges where the water meets the rock, so the painting just looks slapped on top instead of in contact with the water.

One fun bit of trivia, Nemo's line, "The prison camp of Rorapandi, the white man's grave," was homaged in Star Trek VI as "Rura Pente" ... "Known throughout the galaxy as the alien's graveyard."

I know what you mean about the edges of the painting at the shoreline of the water, inside the crater. As you said, the real problems is that the water doesn't look like the way it should along the shoreline.

The ripples in the water should create small waves at the shoreline, and there should be a narrow, sandy beach around the perimeter at several points where the rocks are not too steep.

In the movie, the ripples in the water obviously don't react to the sharp painted edges of shoreline. If they did and caused visible waves at a few points around the edges, I think the sharp edges of the painting against the water would look okay.

Man & The Moon is a fine example, Bud, of what I am referring to regarding Walt Disney. I would also add The Magic Highway.

When you look at his creation of Disneyland's Tomorrowland, EPCOT & his Disney World creations, you know that the future fascinated him.

They have a documentary on Youtube where Walt is walking through his studio demonstrating the animatronic dinosaurs being created for the 1964 World's Fair.

And for now being 53-years old those dinos remain pretty impressive.

So there is absolutely no question as to his passionate interest in the areas of what the future would be like, advancement of special/visual effects for his films & television program.

That is why I've wondered why he produced so little sci-fi productions in his lifetime.

If TTLUTS had been a box office failure then you might see why he would have avoided returning to the genre. But the movie was well received by audiences & critics alike in its day. It remains one of the greatest WD Films to this day.

I selected five IMDB trivia items (the blue text) I thought were interesting, and I added my own remarks below them.
________________________________

Actors portraying the cannibals chasing Ned Land painted humorous messages on their foreheads (not legible on-screen). In particular, one actor wrote "Eat at Joe's" while another actor behind him wrote "I ate Joe".

Note from me: One has to admire cannibals who know when to apply biting humor! Laughing

The world's first functional replica of Captain Nemo's diving helmet, built by Pat Regan of Vulcania Submarine, Hawaii, is on display in the Florida Keys History of Diving Museum in Islamorada, along with items from the film. He also restored an authentic Disney "Crowntop" crewman's diving helmet to operational condition and dived it in Hawaii, 2008; making it the only piece of 20,000 Leagues diving gear returned to service since 1954.

____________

Note from me: I really like Nemo's helmet and I had fun drawing this illustration of the funeral scene in 1982. Very Happy

_________

In addition to his many contributions as the production designer, Harper Goff also taught Kirk Douglas to play the guitar for the "Whale of a Tale" number.

Note from me: Another drawing from 1982. Very Happy

___

The fictional Disney Nautilus actually exists as a real submarine, and it was built by a fan! Pat Regan's Nautilus Minisub was the World's first "real" Disney Nautilus submarine (manned, free-roving, pressure hull-type submersible boat) in any scale: designed and handcrafted in steel by one man working alone in a modest backyard shop in California between 1986 and 1991; acknowledged in writing by Corporate Disney as a visually accurate depiction of the Disney Nautilus in 1992.

In 1993, Regan moved to Hawaii where he became prolific in recreating and diving Disney's unique underwater technologies, including the 20,000 Leagues diving apparatus. The submarine is presently being refurbished for continued operations in the Pacific.

Note from me: How would you like to live next door to this guy? "Hey, Pat, can I help you wash the Nautilus?" Very Happy

The role as one of Ned's female companions [in San Francisco] was the feature film debut of Laurie Mitchell.

____________

Note from me: Wait a minute. You mean THE Laurie Mitchell? The Queen of Outer Space!! Shocked

I love that mini-Nautalis sub! There once were a number of semi-submersible versions used in the ride at Disneyland and Disneyworld.

These ran on a track under water and submerged to a point were the portholes were below the surface. Scenes from the movie and live fish could be seen as you went on a journey 20,000 Leagues Beneath the sea! This ride was retired and is not now at the parks.

I always loved the design of this craft!

I took that ride with my kids 1986, and I even made a stereo audio-cassette recording of the family experience, complete with the narration playing on a nearby speaker while the kids (ages six and three) oowed and aawed near the left-and-right mics throughout their undersea adventure.

__

Listening to it with headphones is like closing your eyes and being there again! Very Happy

And now, through the magic of YouTube, you can have a similar experience! I didn't have video, but the audio on my stereo cassette recording is much better, with the kids' comments to me and their mother clear and loud in the foreground.

I wonder if I could listen to the tape while watching this video and get a nostalgic "blast from the past"!

The original Submarine Voyage at Disneyland has faux-submarines that are basically simple cylinders with portholes along the sides. "Submerging" and "surfacing" are simulated with bubble-blowing apparatus as the subs enter and leave the dark, roofed-over portion of the ride (the "show building"). The ride was given a major overhaul with a "Finding Nemo" theme in 2014.

The "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" ride at the Orlando park used the same technology, but with subs designed to look like scaled-down versions of the movie Nautilus above the waterline. That ride was closed in 1994 and never re-opened.
