I don't believe it's possible to remove the armature from a stop-motion puppet while keeping the model intact. A stop-motion model has layers of latex "muscles" laid over the metal armature and covered by whatever material is used for "skin" (or fur for apes and other mammals). In order to re-use an armature, the model has to be stripped down and destroyed. |

If so, then his Daughter had a VERY expensive doll.

Scotpens in correct, of course, about the sad fate of several Harryhausen animation models. Here's what Pow wrote on the previous page of this thread.
Pow wrote: | To save money on the budget, Ray would recycle the armatures from his other films and reuse 'em on succeeding films.
Gwangi's armature was originally used for the Ceratosaurus from "One Million B.C.; the Ornithomimus armature was from the Phororhacos from "Mysterious Island,"; and the Styracosaurus from "One Million B.C." found its armature inside the Triceratops. |
David, you asked a very interesting question.
Krel wrote: | I wounder how much a stop-motion armature for a Kong or Gwangi would weigh? |
I suspect the armature weighs about as much as double-handful of large nuts and bolts —
— and the exterior is just padding and a rubber "skin" that has to be thin so is won't inhibit the movement of the armature during the animation.
So, in addition to being a "very expensive doll", Ray's daughter also had a fairly weighty little darlin'. _________________ ____________
