This fine move was crafted by Brad Bird, the mastermind behind The Incredibles, a sci-fi / James Bond tribute that thrilled fans of both genres.

Mr. Bird spent years creating this equally devoted homage to 1950s classics using the time-honored two-dimensional art form that gave us great movies which ranged from Snow White to The Lion King before the art form was finally replaced by CGI.

As much as I appreciate what Mr. Bird tried to do, this heroic effort to make one last 1950s science fiction movie isn't successful, and I've never been fond of it.

One of my 10 favorite movies. I was fortunate to see it on a big screen a couple of years ago!

It's the 1950s and young Hogarth Hughes happens upon a visitor from space ..... in the form of a giant iron man.

Delightful animation adaptation of Ted Hughes' much beloved 1968 novel "The Iron Man". Set during the period of time when Cold War and sci-fi paranoia was prevalent, The Iron Giant embraces these themes and stokes them with lessons of friendship, hatred, death and pertinent reminders of pacifism. Directed by Brad Bird and scripted by Tim McCanilies and Andy Brent Forrester, The Iron Giant is one of those rare animation animals that delights the kids as much as it does the watching adults. Though the actual giant himself, with all his dazzling weaponry, is the star attraction on show, it's the iron colossus' inner conflict that gives the film its heart. Aided by his friend, young Hogarth, good old iron decides he doesn't want to be a big weapon, but the authorities, as is nearly always the way, just can't let it be. The unflinching attitude that ran through many of the 50s sci-fi schlockers was one of being "because we don't understand it, lets destroy it" is something that Ted Hughes and the film makers here capture perfectly. Sophisticated and intelligent in its approach and delivery, this is definitely one of the better animated film's from the modern age. 9/10

Wonderful movie!

Recently it was designated as one of the 15 best Sci-fi movies of all time.

It was a heartfelt, heartwarming example of what film can be in telling stories that tell more than just what is usually presented from the cine-video mills of todays Hollywood.

And...Yes...I have the Walmart version figure proudly presented on my bookshelf between Robby and Gort along with my giant Iron Giant bolt!

~ Brad Bird personally animated the scene where Hogarth rants to Dean about his problems in a super fast pace after he gives him Espresso.

Note from me: Not many directors are also skilled artiss. Brad Bird and James Cameron are the only two I know of, but there are probably others.

~ Brad Bird was in part inspired to make this movie as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her husband by gun violence. His pitch was this: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?"

Note from me: That is one very deep thought . . .

~ When the Giant looks over the hill at Rockwell, there is a moving star near the moon on the right hand side. This is meant to be Sputnik.

Note from me: Nice touch.

~ In order to better blend the computer-generated Giant into the traditionally animated film, technicians came up with a program that gave the Giant's lines a slight "wobble," in order to match the natural line imperfections found in hand-drawn animation.

Note from me: I'll have to watch for this detail the next time I see the movie.

~ In the scene where the Giant discovers the dead deer, and notices the gun, he briefly gains red eyes while his "irises" narrow before snapping out of it. This is the first sign that the giant was actually a weapon.

Note from me: This was a subtle and clever idea.

~ One of the scenes not included in the original theatrical cut of the movie involves a dream sequence depicting images of the Iron Giant's race, and their conflict that drove him from his home-world leading to his crash-landing on Earth. The scene is added to the movie in the Signature Edition.

Note from me: I checked the running time of this movie on the DVD which Netflix offers, and it's 86 minutes. The running time of the Signature Edition is 90 minutes. Apparently I'll have to buy the Signature Edition DVD or BD to see the extended version.
