Again the brilliant Mr. Bogdan presents us with a review at least as enjoyable as the movie it addresses, this time a somewhat disappointing "Lost World" story which falls a bit short of movies like The Land Unknown, or even Irwin Allens The Lost World.

I have fond memories of watching a VHS tape of this movie for the first time with friends on a summer evening at a friend's house in the 1990s after a backyard cookout.

It was a night of grilled burgers and spirited conversation around the backyard grill before we took our food into the living room and balanced our plates in our laps (some on the sofa, others on the floor), while we watched one of the last 1950s sci-fi movies we hadn't seen many times in the past.

Most of us had grown in up in the 50s or 60s, so we were eager to see anything we'd missed in all the years since then.
This one was enjoyable in spite of its shortcomings.

And the introduction by Dr. Frank Baxter was a real treat. People my age remember his Bell Telephone science specials, which were shown in our science classes in high school! Very Happy

Absolutely! This was what made this film unique! Those our age peers had seen Dr. Baxter in many school films and, at least, felt he had some credulity. This one film had the cache of a "possible" story, and that gave it a bit of a boost in my enjoyment of it.

Certainly not the "best" of the 50's when held up to FORBIDDEN PLANET and THIS ISLAND EARTH, but absolutely a fun way to spend an hour and a half!

I'm not sure exactly what this means to humanity, but here is further evidence that the ne'er-do-well Metalunans have contacted and conspired with not only Cal Meacham, but also other Earthlings in an earlier time.

Could that be....

A Pelucidarian capacitor from a Metalunian interocitor?

Gord, that one phrase proves your claim concerning the "poetic" feel of your fiction word.

I keep saying it over and over while grinning from ear to ear! Laughing

I've heard rumours that the Big finish Doctor Who audios have a thing about interocitors these days and mention them whenever they can!

THE MOLE PEOPLE is one of my favorite 50's movies. The parts I like the best are the parts that many others ridicule: Frank Baxter's intro (I love it!) and the initial discovery process (much of which was outtakes from other movies, if I'm not mistaken) held my interest very well.

To me, the wonderful thing about Dr. Baxter's enthusiastic review of various hollow earth theories is the fact that these ideas are so appealing (especially to wide-eyed, sci-fi lovn' kids) that just talking about them is fun. Very Happy

So, this movie's highly fanciful and totally fictional premise starts off with a lecture about several highly fanciful theories that have a connection with the story.

It's like . . . sci-fi foreplay. Sort of. Confused

IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production. Very Happy

~ The humps for the mole people were done by stuffing the backs of the actors who played them with newspapers.

Note from me: I get a funny mental image of the actors playing the mole people sitting around between takes, reading wrinkled newspapers they've pulled out of each other's humps! Laughing

~ In the original ending, Dr. Bentley and Adad lived happily ever after. The studio, reluctant to imply an interracial relationship, insisted on a new ending two weeks after filming ended.

Note from me: My, have times have changed. Things like interracial relationships are no long considered "wrong".

But the real question is, why did the studio think that John Agar's character and Cynthia Patrick's character should be considered and "interracial relationship"?

After all, John Agar's character is white, and Cynthia Patrick's character is even whiter because she was a member of the albino underground folks! Shocked
