__________

I'll just come right out and say it: this is a terrific remake of a very low-budget sci-fi movie that had nowhere to go but up. Very Happy

It's packed with very funny references to other B movies from the 1950s. The cast is excellent, the special effects are surprisingly good, the music is terrific, and the entire movie is lovingly crafted to pay homage to the cheap-but-beloved original, right down to the goofy deputy who has a plethora of funny lines and the hot floozy who carries on with the infamous Harry.

I had a ball listening for the lines of dialog boldly borrowed from the classics (including Bradbury's philosophical prose from It Came from Outer Space about how the "wind gets into the wires"). I was impressed by the deliberately obvious indoor sets of desert locals, like the ones in Jack Arnold's 1953 classic. And instead of a boring sphere like the original used as the UFO, we get a real flying saucer that's part C-57-D and part Teenagers from Outer Space — buy 100% gorgeous.

The climax treats us to screaming crowds running down the street of the small Midwestern town where the story takes place. At a key moment it looks like things are going to end tragically — but suddenly the very thing happens that I've been saying for years should have been the conclusion of the original!

I know I shouldn't spoil the ending by posting the above picture — but it doesn't actually end there anyway, and what comes next had me cackling with glee.

Very Happy Right off the bat, the studio logo combines (aside from HBO) elements of 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and Universal, along with the look of the Devil's Tower from Close Encounters.

Silly me, I didn't spot all the clever elements in the jokey studio logo, but it was certainly funny. Very Happy

I may have this on DVD somewhere . . . but that DVD collection is kinda' buried so it might hard to dig up. But I have seen this movie and I think it's very well done.

This movie is also from the era of Daryl Hannah hotness. She's had a lot of "work" done in recent years . . . but she was quite something "back in the day"

My goodness . . . Daryl not only isn't hot anymore, she's barely recognizable. Sad

She's only 55, which is twelve years younger than me! Here's what I looked like twelve years ago. Very Happy

Enjoy this extremely well done trailer for this classy remake of the cult classic from the 1950s. I've got the download from YouTube (which is no longer available), and this trailer has given me a BIG urge to watch it! CoolVery Happy

_____________Attack of the 50ft woman Trailer

I watched it again tonight while writing this posts, and I was impressed anew by certain elements which were patterned after the original . . . but improved! Shocked

For example, the dimwitted deputy in the original who was supposed to offer comic relief is a cute (but equally dimwitted) female deputy who is much more likable and nicer to look at! Wink

The rich father of Darryl Hannah is played by William Windom, the captain in the famous Star Trek episode with the Doomsday Machine.

The sexy slut played by the beautiful Yvette Vickers in the original is played by a hot redhead named Cristi Conaway.

And the cheating husband named Harry — whose name Allison Hayes bellows repeatedly as she tracks him down in the climax and kills him with a squeeze from her giant hand — is played by Daniel Baldwin, one of the infamous Baldwin brothers, which seems like an inspired bit of casting, all things consider. Cool

This clever remake is packed with tasteful-but-sexy moments — like when Miss Hannah converts a swimming pool into a bubble bath and then invites Harry to come in and "look at he stars with me". The idea of jumping into a sudsy swimming pool with a giant, naked "Madison" from Splash is an erotic adventure which Mr. Tom Hanks would eagerly dive into head first . . . so to speak! Embarassed

The imaginative and unexpected "climax" of this movie (again . . . so to speak) is certainly not what I expected. But I found it to be truly delightful.

Darryl Hannah said she accepted this role because she "liked the script, and saw it as an allegory about feminism."

Obviously she wanted to show us arrogant males that "size does matter" — and NOT in just one part of the human body! Shocked

I really wish the inept filmmakers who produced that terrible "remake" of It Came from Outer Space recently had been half as talented as the folks who did this delightful tribute to 1950s science fiction.

He was a commodore, actually. I don't think he'd appreciate the demotion.

I can never remember which of the Baldwin brothers played which role. They all look alike!

I suppose you could say it's the story of a woman's personal growth. Wink
