Nicely presented, Bud. I couldn't agree more if I'd written it myself (and let's face it, I couldn't do it nearly as well).

I wonder, if we posted your compare/contrast on the CHFB, that would snap a few Godzi purists out of their stance that the '98 is NOT a turkey.

At the very least, you showed that I'm wasn't completely asleep when I watch Beast the other nite.

Ah, you got me there, sir.

I'll amend my statement to read "the silliest inexplicably popular monster in film history".

In other words, all the ones we agree that are plum silly don't count.

But Godzilla is revered by millions of misguided fans who don't seem to know the difference between a well-designed creature, such as anything Harryhausan ever created, and anything TOHO ever inflicted on us in there ridiculous movies.

I mean, come on guys! Let's be honest here!

A giant moth? A turtle with built-in rocket engines? A bastardized version of a pterodactyl that looks like that silly Rodan?

I might be prejudiced towards my own amateur drawings of monsters, but I'm convinced that my stuff is better than all those god-awful Toho creations!

Yeah, but you can't exactly do man-in-suit with those kinds of designs, which would've basically forced them to do it all stop motion, which is clearly not a direction in which they wanted to go.

By the way, I apologize for the condescending tone of my above message. I insulted the fans of Japanese monster movies and acted snotty on the subject of monster designs.

That said, I'm still certain that even a man in a suit could have looked much better than Godzilla. Artist Jim Peavy managed to make him appealing in the painting he did for the cover of Wonder magazine. but that was mostly because of Jim's impressive style and his skilled use of color.

And call me crazy but I think a man would fit into a suit version of Godzilla from the recent movie, with a counterweight in the tail to allow the operator to lean forward and still be balanced.

Now, I'm sure somebody will say, "But what about those three-jointed legs, Bud?"

Well, the lower legs are thick enough and short enough to actually allow the operator's legs from his knees to his heels to fit inside the jointed bend. A bulge could be added to the back to make room for the operator's heel, and it would actually make the feet look a little better.

His feet could be positioned atop a sort of "wedge shoe" so that he's walking on the balls of his feet.

I'm not some big kaiju fan, or that enamored of the Godzilla designs, but I do think there are star monsters even sillier: Gamara for one.

But going back to the Big G, there isn't even one design. The suits changed a lot over the years. And, if you actually look at it, the original Gojira from 1954 isn't all that far removed from a lot of the renderings of dinosaurs from the era, right down to the upright posture and absurd dragging tail, albeit with a radiation scarred hide. Some of the early sketches depicted a head which evoked a mushroom cloud, and while this idea was largely scrapped I think you can see traces of it in the final design of the original film.

Nope. Looking at the model of the "new" Godzi, I repeat my previous opinion. He looks too chunky. I prefer my monsters to at least try to have a neck.

The '98 works for me. Ordinarily, I prefer function over form, but he (she?) has both.
