Well, here's how it happened.

I heard this movie was good and I bought the DVD. Watched it and didn't think it was all that great. The characters talked funny and I didn't understand a lot of the dialog.

So, I gave away the DVD. Rolling Eyes

Later on I started watching the series. Learned what all the slang meant and got to know the backstory the movie is based on and fell in love with the show.

So, I bought another DVD.

Live and learn, eh? Embarassed

I wonder if the dunderheads who forced Joss Whedon to show the episodes out of order and then cancelled the series ever wake up in the middle of the night and think —

"I did the same thing as those idiots who cancelled Star Trek!" Shocked

Gee, I hope so.

And I hope the bed is wet when they wake up.

It was OK, although for reason I always thought that the show looked better as a series rather than as a feature film.

Whedon would agree. They cut him off at the knees, and he managed to get the movie done as a consolation prize for the millions of fans who loved what he had done.

But Bud, its as you wrote before "Its called show business" for a reason.

I've had sf TV shows cancelled that I was crazy about such as Farscape, Space: Above & Beyond, among others.

In most cases the cancelling is due to low ratings. Harsh reality to see 'em not renewed, but it happens all the time.
Much as I wish otherwise. Sad

Here's how one website describes the unforgivable way that the Fox network sabotaged Firefly. This wasn't "business" — this was insanity.

The Mary Sue wrote:
Firefly, as many Joss Whedon fans will tell you, was fantastic.

Its quick cancellation after only eleven episodes wasn't due to the quality of the show, but more due to the way that Fox handled the show, showing episodes out of order, never having aired three of the series' fourteen episodes, and even going so far as to not air the first episode (which was double the length of a regular episode) of the show, which contained most of the characters' backstory and set up the show for the future.

Sad

"Farscape" got good ratings, but was a very expensive series, that the Henson Company was footing much of the bill for. They considered it good publicity for their work. The "Stargate SG1" Producers claim that they were probably the reason for the cancellation, due to the high cost Sci-Fi had to pay for the show.

"Space: Above and Beyond" was canceled for a few reasons, like constantly being preempted, being given the Friday night death slot, and the big one . . . Chris Carter. The "X-Files" was such a big hit, that Fox was willing to do almost anything to keep him happy. SAAB was created by Glen Morgan and James Wong, the two top writers for the "X-Files", and Chris Carter wanted them back. From the beginning, the show was doomed. DOOMED, I TELL YOU!

Fox put a lot of good shows on the air, most in the Friday night death slot. The "X-Files" was one of the few survivors.

Okay, that does it. I'm putting "Farscape" and "Space: Above & Beyond" on my Netflix list. I can't be the site admin of All Sci-Fi and keep whining about how I've not seen either one of them! Sad

"Farscape" starts out slow for the first few episodes. Most people thought it was a kiddy show, until they did something horrible to poor Pilot. Stick with it, it definitely gets better as it goes on, and you get to know the characters.

I recently bought the Firefly series DVD, having completely missed it when it was originally aired. I have two problems with this set:

1) When I bought it, I knew very little about the series, but I did know that there were three unaired episodes that were later turned into a MOVIE called Serenity. I saw that the EPISODE Serenity was included in the set, and assumed that it was the Serenity MOVIE, so I saved it to watch last. Big mistake- that first episode sets up all of the other episodes. Now I know better, so I'm watching everything again in the correct order. It all makes more sense this time.

2) Now I gotta buy the Serenity movie.

Oh my goodness. You skipped the pilot episode by mistake. I cringed when I read that just now. Sad

Unfortunately I did sort of the same thing. I knew nothing about the series, and when the move came out I went to see it. I couldn't understand a lot of the dialog because I hadn't learned the slang yet. I didn't have the background that was absolutely necessary to comprehend and enjoy this remarkable movie, a continuation of the series.

That's the bad news.

Here's the good news.

I bought the box set, I watched the episodes, I loved the series, I became a devoted fan, and I started fist fights in seedy bars when roughnecks made rude remarks about it. Mad

I don't recommend you go to that extreme, but Firefly is certainly good enough to watch several times over the years, so you can enjoy you're second viewing with a deeper understanding of this great series.

Just don't say anything negative about it around me after I've had a few too many.
Shocked

Sure would enjoy a second Serenity film.

As doubtful as that would be. Sad

Nathon Fillion certainly would like a series of films (set later than the TV series, of course) as he has often stated that there are many unresolved issues.

Firefly was a wonderful show, yes... it will be good to get out that box set some day and watch all those episodes again. It wasn't the only sf series to have its episodes broadcast in the wrong order - how about Babylon 5: Crusade, where an episode halfway through had to introduce a change in uniform, to explain why from the following week the first-created episodes would be shown, in which the uniform had been a different design?
