What do you get when you combine the perfect cast, a great concept, perfect special effects, and robots that box.

This magnificent movie, naturally.

The plot is allegedly based on "Steel", a Richard Matheson short story which became an episode on The Twilight Zone. I've seen the episode, and frankly there's no family resemblance at all.

This is one of those movies that I have to resist the urge to watch as often as I'd really like to, because that would be about once a week, and pretty soon I'd be mouthing dialog along with the characters and jumping around the living room during the boxing scenes, beating the crap out my ficus tree.

Hugh Jackman's performance is bang on target, and little Dakota Goyo has as much charm and acting skill as any adult I know. Evangeline Lily is lovely and not in enough scenes, and Atom proves that mimes can kick ass if they're robots with brave little boys who believe in them.

With a budget of $110 million and a box office take of $299 million, the film made the suits real happy, and a sequel is still a definite possibility. Director Shawn Levy and star Hugh Jackman have been working to make that happen, and statements the director has made on the subject indicate that he and Hugh are both dedicated to the project.

If Dakota Goyo — who is now 16 years old — gets in on the sequel, it will be quite a different story for that reason alone. But I don't have any good ideas for where a sequel should go, so I'm hoping the filmmakers will find a way to tread new ground rather than just take us down memory lane.

A great trailer which promises a great movie — and a movie which lives up to the promise. That does NOT happen often, folks. Cool

This movie rocks. Hugh Jackman rocks. Dakota Goyo rocks. Evangeline Lilly rocks. Robots in general rock. “Nuff said. (I miss Stan Lee. He rocked, too.)

IMDB has 39 trivia items for this movie. Here’s a few of the ones I found the most interesting, in the blue text. Very Happy
________________________________

~ Each of the robots were built both in real life and CGI. For certain shots with animatronics, they were controlled by more than twenty puppeteers.

Note from me: I've never been able to tell the "real life" robots from the CGI ones. Impressive, eh?

~ Much of the robot boxing fights were motion-captured using professional boxers, supervised by Sugar Ray Leonard.

Note from me: Ah-ha! That's why the fight sequences look so convincing.

~ The film is based on "Steel," a 1956 short story by I Am Legend (2007) author Richard Matheson. It was also made into an episode of The Twilight Zone (1959), called The Twilight Zone: Steel (1963).

Note from me: The Twilight Zone episode is (in my opinion) one of the least impressive. Sad

~ Shawn Levy chose to film the movie in Michigan, because he was blown away by the Model T automobile plant in Highland Park near Detroit. He felt it was the perfect set for the first fight scene, called Crash Palace, in the film. No other location he visited in New Mexico, Los Angeles, or Georgia came close.

Note from me: And just think, today all the car factories are filled with (you guess it) ROBOTS! Ya gotta love the irony! Very Happy

__________

~ Movie features five Marvel superheroes. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Evangeline Lilly as Wasp, Kevin Durand as The Blob, and Dakota Goyo as Young Thor.

Note from me: Now THAT'S an impressive pedigree!

~ Shawn Levy notes in the DVD commentary as the bull comes out of the chute to fight Ambush, that two bulls were used, but that the better performer, Kujo, only had one horn. In that shot, a second horn was added with computer graphics.

Note from me: One can't help wondering how Kujo lost one of his horns if he was such a good fighter. Or did he leave the horn IN his opponent!? Shocked

My version of Real Plastic

These are rewired Robosapian V2s. The leg wires in all original V2s fails and shorts.

Morbius, that video is wild and wacky. Thanks for sharing it. Very Happy

I watched my Blu-ray of this amazing movie again today and I loved it as much as I have every other time I've seen it.

It's everything an enjoyable science fiction movie should be. It has a great premise, a skilled cinematic execution, a stellar cast, a rousing musical score, and a script that deserves an Academy Award.

As for the designs of the robots, they are incredible! Shocked

Back in the 1990s I had fun creating the robot designs shown below. And while watching Real Steel today I noticed a few similarities to the robots in the movie. It's not a matter of the designs looking the same, it's more like the way they have a sort of "family resemblance".

Here's the drawings I made in 1990s, just to show why I love Real Steel so much. Very Happy

I liked the movie and was surprised they didn't rush a sequel for it. I'm more surprised by the news that there's supposedly a series in development.

Your robots would make an interesting 3d collection. If I knew how to do that I would.

Thanks for the compliment, Tom!

I'd love to see 3D renderings of my drawings — both the robots and the various creatures I've drawn. For example, the three guys below would present quite challenge! Very Happy
