I think Stealth's imaginative story and gorgeous FX should get a little respect from the people who have been watching Forbidden Planet for 55 years and calling it a classic motion picture.

Modern audience might not have liked Stealth -- but would they have liked Forbidden Planet if it were released to theaters today?

Not bloody likely, huh?

And if you saw Stealth back in 1956, would you have said, "Gee, I didn't like this cool movie about a futuristic jet fighter flown by a super-smart computer because . . . Rotten Tomatoes gave it a rating of 13 per cent!"

My point is this: I haven't heard any criticism of Stealth other than comments about how critics didn't like it and how lots of people didn't go see it!

I don't base my opinions of movies on what critics didn't like or the number of people who didn't go see it. And I know damn well nobody else here does either.

So, let's start talking about what WE did-or-didn't like about this movie.

For example, I liked the gutsy fighter pilots who objected to being replaced by an aircraft controlled by artificial intelligence. I also liked the way the artificial intelligence was portrayed. And I liked the fact the pilots ended up understanding that the A.I. aircraft was very bold, smart, and noble.

Finally, I liked the happy/sad ending in which some of the characters (human and A.I.) lived and some died after they worked together as a team against the bad guys.

In short: For God's sake, what's NOT to like about this movie?

Whats not to like?

Well . . . Josh Lucas and Jamie Foxx . . . just didn't buy them as naval aviators. Biel is always a pleasure to look at however.

The effects are fantastic . . . certainly leagues beyond those of 'Firefox' (which is to be expected given how many years difference there has been).

These planes have the most fantastic flying range for a jet fighter than the world has ever seen!!! Even with a weird aerial refueling stop.

Once again when dealing with AI people should learn to make sure the device is properly grounded when thunderstorms are about. "It's alive, IT'S ALIVE!!!"

I enjoyed Stealth enough to buy the DVD after seeing it; Josh Lucas and Jamie Foxx notwithstanding.

I thought the CGI work to integrate the fictional aircraft with real aircraft carrier footage was outstanding.

<< SPOILER ALERT >>

I also felt the AI drone's self-sacrifice was a nice switch on the usual doomsday portrayals.

I have a friend who says he doesn't like this movie because he doesn't care for Jamie Foxx. I don't quite get that. He seems just fine to me.

Bongo had this to say on the same subject.

Wait, a minute. Bongo didn't buy Foxx and Lucas as fighter pilots . . . but he's fine with Miss Hot Stuff in that same role? Oookaaaay . . .

(Uh . . . by the way, Foxx was the one who played Tom Cruise's partner, right? I really don't keep up with all these modern actors, I guess . . .) Wink

There's a lot that can be forgiven where Ms. Biel is concerned. The Force is with her.

Worst movie ever.

There's almost too many bad things to list.

Josh Lucas is the most effeminate action hero in history. Why he keeps getting cast in tough guy roles is a mystery. I guarantee you that he will come out as gay and people will say, "Gee, we didn't see that coming" Rolling Eyes

In the tradition of Seinfeld, I'm forced to say, "not that there is anything wrong with that". But I would find Harvery Fierstein just as appropriate for the role of naval aviator as Josh Lucas. I'm guessing they hired Lucas because Fierstein was too expensive.

My goodness, Brent, we certainly have different taste in science fiction. You dislike this movie, you think all the Star Trek series are preachy and pretentious, and you fall asleep every time you try to watch Star Wars.

I'm sure there are lots of sci-fi movies we both enjoy . . . but it seems like there are quite a few of my favorites on your "bad" list.

It's plum perflexin'. Rolling Eyes

This movie certainly seems to polarize opinions!

Wayne and I love it, Brent calls it "the worst movie every made", and Bulldogtrekker agrees with him. One reason he dislikes it is because he dislikes Jamie Foxx.

I'm baffled by these negative opinions. They seem odd in view of the stunning FX, the exciting story, the brilliant sci-fi concepts, and the heart warming climax. Confused

But I won't try to argue with the folks who don't like it, because we all know that there's no accounting for tastes.

I recently saw Wonder Woman — a VERY popular movie that's making money faster than the U.S. mint. And during the entire two hours and seventeen minutes I sat in the theater, I wondered when it was going to finally get good and justify all the public praise.

It never did. Sad

Anyway, here's a few interesting trivia items from IMDB about Stealth.
________________________________

A photo of one of the F/A-37 Talon mock-ups, snapped on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln during filming was published in an Australian aviation magazine, claiming that the Talon was an actual prototype aircraft being tested by the US Navy.

Note from me: I must admit that the photo looks mighty impressive. Very Happy

The design of the Talon jets is based on the Northrop Grumman Switchblade, a forward-swept swing wing fighter-bomber intended to replace the F-111.

Note from me: Sorry, but I think this one is dead wrong. The picture above is the Northrop Grumman Switchblade and it looks about as much like the aircraft in this movie as my Aunt June looked like Marilyn Monroe. (Aunt June was redheaded and not exactly the "looker" of the family. Shocked)

Early in the movie, the crew looks for debris on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln. This is known as the FOD (Foreign Object Debris) walk, and it is an essential flight safety procedure on all aircraft carriers. Ingesting even a small piece of debris can cause jet engine failure, endangering the plane and its crew.

Note from me: When I was a Security Policeman in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1971, we were told to keep a sharp eye out for FOD on the runways, taxiways, and parking ramps we patrolled. Since all we had to do most of the time was walk around and guard the planes on the flight line, this wasn't real difficult.

Jessica Biel was the only actor to not get motion sickness from the gimballed cockpit.

Note from me: Oh, this is rich! I'm sure the big, bad male actors were embarrassed by this! Very Happy

This picture was made with the support of the U.S. Navy. It was the first picture to film a completely fictional military aircraft on an actual carrier.

Note from me: Wow, that has to count for something doesn't it? Confused

Capt. Cummings mentions that the UCAV has a pulse detonation engine and hybrid scramjet engines. Pulse detonation engines and scramjet engines have been successfully tested, but as of 2012 neither of these technologies has been deployed in any known production aircraft.

Note from me: My respect for the science in this science fiction movie just went up!

On your recommendation I downloaded and watched this film this morning and--------I liked it!!!

Yes, Jamie Foxx was a bit obnoxious, but at least

(SPOILER ALERT!)

----he wasn't in the whole movie.
The story was good although a bit cliche and predictable.

The effects were practically seamless and very effective. The action scenes, which dominated the film, were VERY exciting! And the Talon and the ECAV were beautiful!

If they don't exist-----THEY SHOULD!

Thanks, Bud, for turning me on to this film!

I unwrapped my new DVD of this movie today and spent a delightful two hours enjoying this amazing story.

I really don't understand any of the folks who didn't appreciate this awesome science fiction movie. It's virtually flawless. It's a fast-paced story that doesn't rush the pacing so much that it neglects the characterizations.

It has eye-popping FX which don't even look like FX — but they must be, because we don't have real aircraft like these, even though the scenes of them look real.

The conflict between the humans and the AI is believable, but not two-dimensional. Everybody makes choices that seem right to them, and everybody makes mistakes along the way.

The climax is imaginative, action-packed, and exciting. The final moments are not predictable.

I wish I'd written the story for this movie. I'd feel pretty proud of myself if I had done so.

I thought that the rescue scene at the end was a bit un-realistic, although with GPS what is is and could be maybe it could be possible.

Suspending that, it was a fast paced adventure that worked throughout.
